Scathing Editorial on war reporting
I spotted this over on NRO, by way of Rush Limbaugh's site: History or Hysteria?: Our vulture pundits regurgitate rumor and buzz It is a scathing critique of the left's wartime reporting and punditry by Victor Davis Hanson. Must Read. Update: I just had to add this one excerpt. It really puts the entire present Iraq campaign in perspective: We should recall that in the first Gulf War we bombed for over 44 days. Critics in 1991 by day 10 were complaining because after the first few nights’ pyrotechnics, Saddam’s army had not crumbled. In turn, earlier swaggering air-advocates had promised victory in three weeks — only to be unjustly slandered that they had failed to end the war in six. Gulf War I is considered a great victory; it required 48 days of air and ground attacks by an enormous coalition to expel the Iraqi army from Kuwait. Our present attempt, with half the force, seeks to end Saddam Hussein altogether — and on day 7 already had him cut off, trapped, and besieged.Posted By Crazy Write Winger at March 29, 2003 07:57 AM | TrackBack Comments
exactly. it further confirms my suspicion that most reporters covering this war, especially on TV, have barely a clue about warfare, history or technology. Posted by: angryYkook at March 29, 2003 08:37 AMI wish I could force feed this down the medias fucking throats so they could finaly get it. But alas, the media are no longer news, they are entertainment. Posted by: FaaQ at March 29, 2003 10:04 AMOh, it gets even better: In the first 6 months of WWII, all the news was bad. German U-boats off the East coast, Japanese forces sweeping through the Pacific, etc. How would that war proceeded if we had the instant analysis that exists today? P.S. to FaaQ -- you are correct: news has morphed into entertainment in the effort to get ratings. Posted by: Ara Rubyan at March 29, 2003 10:24 AMThat ain't nothing.
