Can't Argue with Peaceniks
I originally posted this on my blog, but would like to contribute it here also. I've cleaned it up a bit and edited out my profanity for those who might be offended. This evening my fiancée and I met up with her two younger sisters for dinner. As we were waiting for a table I was listening to 1010 WINS news coverage of the war (there wasn't much of it). One of her sisters (sister No.1) asked me what my take on the war was. I told her, "I don't want to talk about it in front of [my fiancée], I don't want to piss anyone off here". My fiancée doesn't like when I talk about politics and the news with her siblings because I get pissed off easily and she'd rather we avoid any arguments. Anyway, I didn't want to talk about the war in front of them but her sisters gave me their take on it, which is basically that George W. Bush is only after Iraqi oil... blah blah blah, that same old worn out liberal bulls--t that the hippies and left wingers hang on to, even though they've been proven wrong time and again (i.e. if it was about Iraqi oil the U.S. would have made toast out of Saddam back in 1991 and we would have had Iraqi oil for the last 12 years). My fiancée's other sister (sister No.2) said... and I quote(!!), "About 50% of this war is about oil". To that I really couldn't say anything. How do you debate with someone whose frame of mind is to just accept the statement, "50% of this war is about oil" without questioning it? I just said something like, "And where did you get 50% from?" and let it rest. Then sister No.1 told us how her "ignorant American" boss at work said something about how even if this war is about oil, the U.S. still has the right to go in and take it if it wants because the U.S. is such a powerful nation. So I came to the conclusion that on both sides, Pro-war and Anti-war, there are idiots who just don't get it. These people have forgotten about September 11th, 2001. They've forgotten about the extremist Islamic groups who consider every single U.S. citizen (including civilians) a soldier fighting for the "imperialist" U.S. government. They've forgotten that just living and working in the U.S. is reason enough for these radial Muslims for all of us to die a horrible death. If we support the U.S. economy, the radical Muslims say we must die. Saddam Hussein, despite how much the Left and the Peaceniks have turned him into a hero and a victim of U.S. "hegemony", is the enemy. He has for nearly the last 30 years been trying to produce nuclear weapons (with the help of France, Russia and China), which he will unleash the minute he gets his hands on them, on Western countries like Israel and the United States. My opinion? I won't argue with people about it, because when you are right, you are right, and I thank God every day we have a President with the balls to get the job done, Saddam Hussein and the terrorists out to get us can all be damned. After we liberate the Iraqi people, they ought to fly the U.S. flag there for good, so they won't forget, like the French did, who gave them their liberty. If we happen to get more oil, great, more SUVs for the rich hypocrites in Hollywood. But that's just not what this war is about. It's about Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness. If the Euro-Trash can't accept it, I urge them to go back to the land of cheese and arrogance. Posted By Greg Soon at March 24, 2003 10:20 PMComments
Trust me, George - after enduring mass emails at work with all kinds of "Oillll" propaganda, I have since started pretending I am not interested in politics, just so I can keep my job. It isn't easy. Posted by: Shanti at March 25, 2003 02:46 AMwe supplied iraq with supplied for WMD too: http://www.thememoryhole.org/corp/iraq-suppliers.htm I just still have issues with the connection between islamic fundamentalists and the only secular state in the region.. Then I read things like http://lists.elistx.com/archives/interesting-people/200303/msg00315.html and wonder.. Posted by: peter at March 25, 2003 08:35 AMPost a comment
