Are you sure you got that translation right?

Literally translated I get:"One day gives for a lot"

Which I would translate as: "A lot can happen in a day"

If you translate it that way then it makes much more sense as an advertisement for a news site. They have a point. A lot can happen in a day, and there is no more succinct modern example of that than 9/11.

I could of course be wrong on the translation, but I seriously doubt that this is the grievous attack on our history that you think it is.

I'm probably not informed enough to imagine a benign reference to 9-11 with those before and after photos, but what is the significance of "3 months"?

They're advertising a three month subscription to El Pais.

Now, my spanish is very, very poor, but I'm reading that as (figuratively) "A lot can happen in a day, imagine what can happen in three months."

Literally (to the best of my ability): "One day gives a lot. Imagine what can follow in three months."

Maybe El Pais hired some nonnative advertising firm through their EU contacts and just didn't vet it properly?

Or would the alternate translation still offend? I personally feel my translation is a fair bit less harsh than the original.

Since the ad is promoting a subscription, they probably meant to be controversial to attract attention. It worked but it's obvioulsy in bad taste even if they only meant to point out how daily events can shape the world.

Heh. For better or for worse, one of their selling points is "Exclusive multimedia animations." I'm hoping that should colloquialize as "presentations," or I may not be able to stop laughing.

If you have passed the kindergarten (I doubt) you will be able to understand that this offer makes allusion to the fact that 9/11 (one single day) a lot of things changed in the World, and in the current moments, each day gives a lot of news and you will get 3 months for free in ELPAIS.es because you are a nice guy, very intelligent and impartial and blablabla.

And for all of you, guys, this is a little incident which shows you which kind of information gives V-Man to you, and which kind of terrible lies about my country (and about many other countries too) I am continuously reading here.

V-Man why you don’t talk about the fact that your hated Socialist Spanish government has augmented the Spanish presence in Afghanistan (a real war against terrorism) from 118 soldiers to 1100 ? Or about 10 Islamic terrorists arrested yesterday in Spain? I will forget the day that 7 terrorists linked to the 3/11 blew themselves up when their flat was stormed by the Spanish GEO and one of the officers died. Bravo, VinoTinto on putting the record straight. My Spanish is moderate so I didn't attempt to fully understand the statement. But I would be shocked if a national newspaper reputation on the line by making jibes at 9/11.

I believe some people on this site should try displaying some semblance humility for once. Its an ugly place to be sometimes and one wonders if this is the normal behaviour of these people in other social situations.

The amount of vitriol and venom and lack of respect dispatched on this site for no other reason than ignorance does nothing for the image of the American for non-Americans; apart from confirm many unpleasant stereotypical images.

The pride of that ignorance is the unforgivable thing.

I think this site has gone down hill alot recently, ignorant playground taunts are one thing, but when that is the level that these people aspire to is another.

You are trying to pull the same tricks about translation that Arabs, Palestinians, etc., use regarding Arabic, the Quran, and the imams’ hateful sermons. You use the least offensive translation possible, counting on the ignorance of your readers.

A correct translation, with semantic augmentations noted: “One day gives [to someone] for much [opportunity]. Imagine to yourself that which can come to pass in three months.”

Or, if that’s not good enough for you, I ran it by a co-worker who is truly bi-lingual. His translation of the first sentence matched nearly word for word: “You can do a lot in one day.” When I explained to him what the line was from, he was clearly offended.

Let El País run a similar ad, showing the bombed-out trains. That is, if it isn't hitting a little too close to home for them.

Do you think that I would make a wrong translation over this issue? Do you think that I don’t know that many people in the Command Post know how to speak Spanish? Do you think that I am like V-Man?

Lets go, my translation is no literal, mainly because when you make literal translations, many sentences became in a non sense, or they lost their real meaning or shade. I see they didn’t explain it to you in the kindergarten.

The literal translation is

“One day gives for much. Imagine to yourself that which can come to pass in three months.”


But some Spaniard reading this, would read:

“A lot can happen in a day, imagine what can happen in three months.”

My initial translation is not correct at 100%, because with the “could happen”, I allowed the paranoids to think weird things (Osama the mysterious..). The correct translation is the last one (the Lackey's one), and by the way, is the least offensive translation. Also it has a shade of “One day gives [to someone] for much”, but clearly from the point of view of the journalist, and NOT from the point of view of the terrorist.

Also the international consequences were not the same after the 9/11 and 3/11.

But, what is happening here is more dangerous than a grotesque translation. Here, you are applying the George Bush maxim: “If you are not with us, you are against us”. Which every body understand for “If you are not one of our obedient angels, you are a terrorist and you will be punished”.

El Pais is in Spain (in prestige terms) something like the New York Times, or the Washington Post is in USA. The fact that you think, and you insist, that El Pais is making fun of the 9/11, or that El Pais is claiming or encouraging a new terrorist attack against somebody, just shows how ill you are, and how paranoid you are, and how dangerous for the World is becoming the American society. Should we expect some American air strike soon?

The American media (mainly), and the American and Australian government (but not the Brit one, as far as I know) are preparing a scapegoat for the next terrorist attacks. Mr. Zapatero was beaten up by the American media during one month, until everybody got that he was a coward anti-American pro-terrorist. They had another wicked Spanish, like in the old Hollywood movies. And suddenly he disappeared from the map. Spain just does not exist. Also the American and Australian governments launched a campaign to show the people that if there is a terrorist attack in their countries, the guilty is some Mohammed in some third world country, and the responsible, is Spain. This attitude is pathetic, and by the way, very coward.
I enjoyed a lot when Zapatero said “We are back in Europe”.

And finally ElPais.es assumes the “mea culpa” and it would like to apologize for it to the victims and their families for using the WTC images for their promotional campaign.

Ahh, if the American media showed the half part of the touch and elegance that El Pais shows, the world would be a better place.
