Excuse me while I engage in a bit of family related self promotion.

My son has started his own news website. He is eleven years old.

I'm really proud of him. He finally gave up that damn Neopets crap and he's doing something a bit more constructive with his time.

I owe it all to his teacher, who encourages his students to know what's going on in the world around them. He spends twenty minutes every morning on current events. On Mondays, they watch a half hour mix of the Sunday news shows that the teacher TiVos together.

The teacher is a Kerry supporter, but encourages the kids in the class - like DJ - who are Bush supporters to have healthy debates about the issues.

I didn't give DJ the idea to make this site. He thought of it himself, made it himself, and stole some of the content from Command Post all by himself.

Oh, ok. I told him he could. But the opinions are strictly his.

Anyhow, I'm proud of him, and he added some updates today, so make him (and me) happy and keep his hit counter turning.

Who knows? Maybe we're looking at a future Mark Steyn.

(Hey, it's the most realistic goal he's come up with so far; playing third base for the Yankees and being a world famous rock star are probably not goals to base your life on).

Thank you for indulging this proud mom.

i encourage your son's publishing on the web -- creativity, balance, and all that -- but what sort of world do we live in where an 11 year old is posting articles about soldiers dying? not to give you advice about your kids, but shouldn't he be more concerned with riding his bike, or playing baseball, or his favorite playstation game? seems like our kids are growing up so quickly these days.

x, you and I are both too young to remember growing up during WW2, but talking to my older friends, death dying and our enemies where center stage in pre-tenn boy's life

Michele,

DJ has a great site! Very easy on the eyes an well put together.

Keep up the outstanding work, DJ!

I ALWAYS buy lemonade from the neighborhood stand when it's open. It's not clean, it usually needs more sugar (or even more lemons), and the cup is ridiculously small. You have to support young minds.

Your son's blog is like an Orange Julius stand when compared to the usual lemonade stand. I feel honored to put another tick on the counter.

fair enough -- old-school gi joe dolls and all that. doesn't make it a good thing, though.

After the news briefing, there was an explosion at the Sheraton Hotel in Baghad. Nobody got hurt.

With such a direct, honest style, he'll never have a future in journalism. Good for him.

x, I know how much you love to look for the dark lining in every cloud, but don't you worry your negative little head about my son.

He plays baseball, hockey and guitar and loves his Playstation. I''m not going to worry about the twenty minutes or so a day he will take to update his site.

Frankly, I'd rather have him well-informed than oblivious, like his older sister.

Michele,

Tell DJ I’m impressed with his website. It looks good and is well organized. He’s a very concise journalist. No double speak, and straight forward!

Good for him.

I think it’s very important that we who support a peaceful world take this opportunity to teach our children that it doesn’t come without those who are willing to make sacrifice. Peace is not equal to Utopia. Perhaps, if more parents will do this, we will avoid creating another generation that cowers in the corners and chants “Vietnam Quagmire” as we move to secure our future as a Nation, the freedoms we now enjoy and our existence as a People.

Congratulations DJ.

Honk. It's been years since I've seen MTV, but it sucked then, when most people didn't complain about it. Honk.

Your site looks good.

Posted by: htom at April 9, 2004 08:42 PM

The site looks good, and I'm glad to see a young person taking an interest in current events. I know I didn't when I was 11 (heck, I didn't when I was 21, come to that).

PS: honk!

Honk! Honk!

Your site is way better than anything on teevee. Looking forward to more news!

Message to Ricky Vandal: the sentence you criticize is obviously an automatic entry-counter script that will have a number in between "been" and "updates" as soon as an update has made to the site. In the meantime, would you like to post examples of your literary efforts written when you were eleven years old?

As for "x" -- he/she/it reminds me of all those annoying adults who used to chide me for "reading all the time" and "being so serious" instead of playing with my dollies or doing some other frivolous thing they associated with childhood.

---Daniel-san, use the oriental breathing method before replying. Criticism is the lifeblood of journalism. This is nothing compared to what you will be getting. You should see my blog (do not read it, too much profanity). Patiece, grasshopper, patience.

One of the rewards of parenthood is seeing our children achieve in areas that we had not thought of. Congratulation to both you and Daniel, Michele. You probably did not forsee your activites of the last year and what they would lead to.
I am constantly amazed at what my children, all adults are doing and doing well. With much of it ioutside of their area of expertise. One of them is named Alan.
Another proud mom.
