Happy Birthday, President Reagan

This is a duplicate of the original post from the nikita demosthenes website.

Today is President Ronald Reagan's 93rd birthday. Happy Birthday, President Reagan! Via the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library, here are some quotes and photographs:

"...peace is the highest aspiration of the American People. We will negotiate for it, sacrifice for it, we will never surrender for it, now or ever."
- January 20, 1981

"...there is no limit to what a man can do or where he can go if he doesn't mind who gets the credit."
- January 21, 1981

"General Secretary Gorbachev, if you seek peace, if you seek prosperity for the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe, if you seek liberalization: Come here to this gate! Mr. Gorbachev, open this gate! Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall!"
- June 12, 1987

Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger declares February 6, 2004, "Ronald Reagan Day" via proclamation.

Via the Reagan Ranch Program - President Reagan's last words to the nation:

“In closing, let me thank you, the American people, for giving me the great honor of allowing me to serve as your president. When the Lord calls me home, whenever that day may be, I will leave with the greatest love for this country of ours and eternal optimism for its future. I now begin the journey that will lead me into the sunset of my life. I know that for America there will always be a bright dawn ahead.”

Send President Reagan well wishes on his birthday here.

Thanks, North Georgia Dogma, for the reminder.

Yeah. Disease really is a character flaw.

It is still better than the many flaws you display here all the time X.

You are a sorry human being.

To start an angry argument, just say the following: "Ronald Reagan was a great President."

X is a graphical server for the unix variants, linux, bsd, freebsd etc. I am beginning a search for another graphics server. It would have been better if x had found another place to operate from. As a linux fan it pisses me off to see this type of conduct.

The whining about the unemployment numbers during this jobless recovery and the fact that it was Mr. Reagan's birthday inspired me to do a little research:

A lot of folks are grumbling about the employment numbers, the budget, the lack of support from our "allies," etc., etc..

More people out of work than when Bush took office. Unemployment better but still not good. Soldiers dead with little to show for it.

Troubling issues, to be sure.

But what did things look like for Ronald Reagan as the final year of his first term began and challengers were jockeying for position?

Right. Look what happened to the national debt under Reagan. We're still paying for that. Childrem born today may well be paying for it all their lives. Sure isn't going to do anything but grow under the current administration or anyone like it.

Before Reagan the GOP really was the party of fiscal conservatism. After him, there is no such (major) party. Hurrah.

Let me just ask you mooks a simple question, is America better off today (or in 1988) than it was in 1980 when inflation, interest rates, and unemployment were all around 10%, when the soviets were eyeing western Europe and invading afghanistan, and when our military was so underfunded a botched helicopter mission set back our middle eastern policy 20 years? Would you trade today for 1979? Simple question.

Posted by: Mark Buehner at February 9, 2004 12:14 AM

and in 2004 the dollar is dropping precipitously, unemployment is at record levels, we're eyeing western europe, invading afghanistan, and our middle eastern policy is slash and burn! what progress we've made!

ps: is reagan dead yet? can i take him for my death-pool? i won last year's with bob hope and johnny cash!

pps: linux sucks.

Unemployment is at record levels??!!!?? Is that true in the universe you live in X?

The unemployment rate is 5.6%.

In 1976 is was at 8.5%
1977 7.7%
1978 7.1%
1979 6.1%

1993 6.9%
1994 6.1%
1995 5.6%

Carter never had lower unemployment than Bush, not even close in fact. Although Clinton started in the midst an economic recovery, and Bush started in the midst of a recession, it took Clinton 3 years before unemployment was this low.
Since 1974, there has only been an unemployment rate lower than we have in 8 years. 8 out of 29. Record unemployment? Did you know France's unemployement is 9.7% and Germanys is 11.1%?

So X, tell me, are you intentionally lying, or just horribly misinformed?

Posted by: Mark Buehner at February 9, 2004 12:50 PM

X,

What a slimy combination of ignorance and callous vulgarity.

Add to what Mark says, "Slash and Burn in the ME"

Wow are you clueless. How about rebuild and construct.

Your chirpy little trolling is laughable. Do you think you help your cause? Some facts and perspective are wanting.

I think you chose your NIC on the basis of what would be hardest for you to misspell.

Posted by: jones at February 9, 2004 01:03 PM

that's very convenient, leaving out the 7.9% in 1992, which dropped every year of the Clinton administration and then started rising again during the Bush administration.

it's also very convenient to leave out the 9.7% in 1982 and 9.6% in 1983, which we both under Reagan.

it would certainly seem that republican administration = higher unemployment.

tell me jones, were we rebuilding and constructing in vietnam?

x

the man (Reagan) is 93 years old with Alzheimers. Of all times, you should have at least - with this post - made a grudging acknowledgment that he accomplished much (i.e., probably being the main contributor to our success in ending the cold war - to our benefit).

If you can't say something nice about a 93 year-old, ailing former President - who you must know accomplished much - you should say nothing at all.

There is more to life than partisan politics, dude.

And on that note, I will ignore the troll X. I couldn't have said it better ND.

I pity such a small human.

Posted by: jones at February 9, 2004 06:41 PM

Wait a minute x, it sounded surprising like you almost said we arent suffering record unemployment. Wanna say that again in my good ear?

Posted by: Mark Buehner at February 9, 2004 07:55 PM

look at the last 12 years. that looks like record unemployment to me.

and nikita, you're absolutely right. for me to be making so big of a deal over only 7 points in the death pool... that's just not right. on the other hand, everyone else is taking reagan, so i need to hedge my bets...

Posted by: x at February 10, 2004 11:58 AM

look at the last 12 years. that looks like record unemployment to me.

there you have it folks - one crack smoker's view of the world. that has got to be the sorriest defense of a patently false statement that i've ever seen. You just lost 3 of the 7 people that thought you were credible, x. The other 4 took another hit and are now squinting harder at the last 12 years. you ought to tell your 4 remaining groupies to stop looking before their eyes get permanently screwed up.

Posted by: wafflestomper at February 10, 2004 01:48 PM

x, do you know what the word 'record' means? Just curious.

Posted by: Mark Buehner at February 10, 2004 02:28 PM

In answer to Mr. Buehner's questions, 2004 is better than 1980. I don't attribute much of that to Pres. Reagan's efforts.

I voted for him, the first time. There were some pretty claims that he'd work to balance the budget or even pay down the national debt. I didn't do my homework to find out that he'd started as governor of California with a big surplus and left the state near bankruptcy. My bad. I remember his inability to get facts right, his tendency to make shit up when he forgot his lines and his staff's eventual decision to limit his media exposure to a dribble of posed presidential photos or very short, tightly controlled snatches of speech. The man had been well known as a dullard since the 1930's. In Hollywood, where the standards aren't all that high. What good was done on Pres. Reagan's watch I credit to his staff, his wife and other advisors. They get the blame for the bad too.

As to the botched hostage rescue in Iran, yeah, Carter micromanaged that thing into the ground. They should have handed the job to the right Marine or special forces commander and given him what he needed. The clusterf**k in Grenada showed that little had changed, with every service involved in what should have been a small Marine op, plagued with radios that didn't talk to each other... a feature of the Iran fiasco, if I remember right. Further, much of the equipment that's done so well in Desert Storm and beyond was Carter era stuff. Reagan's administration was much more interested in the grand vision of Star Wars than that sort of thing.

Yeah, he's old and he's sick. So here's a real and true compliment: He looked good and sounded good on TV.
