al-Qaeda's Strategy: A Debate

Donald Sensing and Steven Den Beste discuss al-Qaeda's strategy. Den Beste thinks they don't have one, beyond "waiting for God" to ensure their victory. Rev. Sensing, drawing on both his military and religious backgrounds, explains that this doesn't mean what Steven thinks it does.

A very good and illuminating exchange, which Ray extends rather nicely.

Does the outcome of this debate change the need to eliminate al-Qaeda as a force upon the earth? I doubt it.

Posted by: gus3 at November 22, 2003 04:47 AM

No, but understanding your opponent's strategy is important in winning a war. It does not change the need to eliminate them, but helps us do it.

This is a reasoned debate between two men who are motivated by a 'need to know' and a 'need to understand'. It is excellent, and I for one am learning something from it.

Exactly what military experience, gives the person credibility to pass comments on Counter Terrorism related matters.

You can't expect a Artillery reared General or an Air-Force Commander to perform Counter Terrorism functions. Or expect them to have the ability to think outside the box in in terms of adapting new tactics.

Leave it to the quiet professionals in Delta. Their chain of command, exists outside the Pentagon muddle. Its a separate entity, that can change, adopt policies at the drop of a hat. Not plagued by career officers detailed to admin. duties.

The organization has nothing but Operators. Ex-operators who provide coordination and logistics.

Certainly not these Analysts at CIA or those in CENTCOM, SOCOM who live in the ivory towers of bureacracy and caught up in unit rivalry.

Zero-Alpha,

I agree with you. Great intelligence and a huge increase in our black ops abilities would make a huge difference in fighting the war on terror. What better way to defeat terrorism by secretly sliting their leaderships throats in the middle of the night. Black Ops are key. It is the most bang for the buck in eliminating terrorist leaders. Cruise missles and bombs cannot "smell" the enemy or account for their movements...

Our force structure has to be small enough to not alert the enemy or their country of origin....and force them to flee but potent enough to kill swiftly and silently.

We really should start pouring money into this....

There is no end to the adventures we can have if we seek them with our eyes wide open.

Dock Animation. Sometimes animating icons in the dock can be useful in communicating the status of the system or application.

In building your amazing Aqua application, one of the most important things to consider is the Dock. There are three things your app needs to be "Dock Compliant." Now, I write this knowing that the Dock will be going through some major changes soon, but for the most part, these should still hold true.

Other examples of these animations might be to show the status of an FTP transfer, the progress of media being digitized, or an updated time signature. And don't forget that users may want to have some control over this, so give them plenty of options, including the ability to turn these functions off.

Adhere to Window Models. Document windows, Utility windows, Click-through, Layering, Drawers, Controls. How do users open windows, how do you properly title windows?

Not quite as entertaining as Shrek, but Dock animation can be an important and useful function in your application. For example, Dock animation is a helpful way to indicate the status of your application.

For my Paint application, I created a series of icons to simulate a rendering algorithm. While the application is performing this CPU-intensive task, you can always see the status of the document by the icon changing in the Dock.

User Assistance. This is helping the user with the proper "next step" when performing a task. Less guesswork for the user on what to do next makes for a better experience.

An interesting comment. But the Marx-inspired liberation theologians over here are all about picketing the School of the Americas, re-fighting the Contra battle of 20 years ago, and laying the blame for all the world's troubles at the feet of the imperialist US. The oppression of the Iraqi people by Saddam -- or the atrocities committed by Third World tyrants across the globe -- do not fit the paradigm and thus are conveniently ignored. You don't see Martin Sheen & Co. arguing for the liberation of the brutalized Iraqi people. Just the opposite. MCNS
