Trash The Income Tax

My personal favorite is a transaction tax that doesn't just focus on consumption, but apparently there's actually a bill for a national sales tax working its way through Congress, though it'll likely go nowhere.

Even though it's not my preferred method, it would be a massive improvement over the Rube Goldberg system we have in place today. I prefer a transaction tax because I want the government to be neutral with regard to how money is used: savings isn't favored over consumption and the tax burden is spread equally over the factors of production -- land, labor and capital. Not so with a consumption tax, which taxes labor disproportionately. But, then again, so does the current system.

Also, to keep a sales tax from being regressive it would require adding complexity to it, whereas a transaction tax would be regressive at the level of the individual purchase, though the rate would only be .6%, but progressive in aggregate.

A nationwide sales tax would still be a major improvement and could be viewed as laying the groundwork for my dream scenario. Check out the Bowl of Gumbo for more on this bill.

Er, the poor would not be adversely affected because they would get a reimbursement check for taxes on necessities?

Not just a National ID, but now a National Debit Card!!! Some government agency knowing every damn thing I buy (yeah, if you use any type of plastic it's already in a database, but...)! Cash outlawed so rebates will be "fair"! And did you know that toilet paper and soap are not necessities (Food Stamps are via Dept of Agriculture, that type of thing is not considered "agricultural product" or food - logical, but inconvenient at best)?

You could still use cash, the store would simply withhold your half of the tax. In fact, out of simplicity, it would probably be done that way in any case.

Mr. Anderson, complain you about the transaction tax or the national sales tax?

I think this "transaction tax" is suppose to be a like a VAT? (value added tax)

Didn't mean to send that message so early... The tax proposal has more problems than the article admits --- we're going to give everyone a check every month? Isn't that a set-up for fraud and con-artists? Plus, we'll be requiring everyone to have a bank account. Bizarre...

On top of that, what makes this guy think it is easy to collect sales tax anyway? Now that sales tax will be a significant figure (23%), will we have federal police stopping by yard sales to enforce this?

The article might say so, but I don't see why anyone would be required to have a bank account, though I can't imagine living without one.

If you work strictly with cash you'll still pay when you go to the grocery store, buy a car, etc.

One of the beauties of a transaction tax, you can avoid it, but there's a strong disincentive to do so. You would have to divorce yourself from the modern economy.

TBox - the sales-tax-with-rebate. And no, cash would not work - how would the rebate be determined?

Transaction tax? Maybe, this is the first I've heard of it.

It didn't have to be profound - it was social. hgh I bring this up because over the last several months, hgh I've written something like seven songs straight buy soma now where the music is complete and finished as somalogy like I want it, and I don't have the words. And, cheap soma I've written a few where the words are to that online soma same point, but although I can hear
music to buy soma online set them to, it's nothing solid, or it isn't fully soma Right. That's weird for me
