Maggie comes in swinging
Former UK Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher broke her medical ban on public speaking with a speech at an Anglo-US free market think-tank in New York last week. Choice quote: "There are too many people who imagine that there is something sophisticated about always believing the best of those who hate your country, and the worst of those who defend it."She also said: . . . she had “drunk deep from the same well of ideas” as her great ally, the former US President Ronald Reagan. Both instinctively knew what worked, she said, including low taxes, small government and enterprise. “We knew, too, what did not work, namely socialism in every shape or form. Nowadays socialism is more often dressed up as environmentalism, feminism, or international concern for human rights. All sound good in the abstract. But scratch the surface and you will as likely as not discover anti-capitalism, patronising and distorting quotas, and intrusions upon the sovereignty and democracy of nations.”As an environmentalist feminist with a concern for human rights, I acknowledge this is true. There are people working in those areas who understand that rule of law, protection of minority rights, representative democracy, and market economies will further those goals much more effectively than vague, biased international bureaucracies, but they are too busy working inside the system to get much publicity. who is the environmental feminist? thatcher or you? Posted by: snorkel at May 17, 2003 03:36 PM "There are people working in those areas who understand that rule of law, protection of minority rights, representative democracy, and market economies will further those goals much more effectively" Absolutely. Progressive politics must be rooted in the principles of liberal democracy and above all a pragmatic attachment to reality. Unfortunately, there are too many liberals who live in obsolete ideological fantasy worlds and have ceased to be a constructive force in progressive politics, especially since 9/11. They have thereby ceded the realm of practical policy to the right. Depressing. Posted by: G Gonzalez at May 17, 2003 06:18 PM I like what Judith and Ms. Thatcher both are saying, that the statists have almost completely hijacked some legitimate social issues, and thereby brought down enmity where comity could be the modus operandi, if only making social progress from the right hadn't been blown off the table of ideas by several generations of impractical, dangerous, and destructive leftist posing. Posted by: Buddy at May 17, 2003 06:22 PM Anyone who's been paying attention must have noticed the increasing similiarity between Green and Red, not just in rhetoric, but in how they want to acheive their respective goals. Posted by: Gabriel Hanna at May 18, 2003 06:57 PM Yep, in both cases the tight little band of zealots providing the energy has visions of straightening out all of humanity, just as soon as they have the POWER. Posted by: Buddy at May 19, 2003 12:37 AM Hello, my name is TBox, and I'm a former Liberal Loather. I wish to thank Margaret Thatcher and Judith for making so abundantly clear to me what has always made me uncomfortable about institutionalized environmentalism, feminism, and concern for human rights. I feel reinvigorated for progressive causes like environmentalism and feminism now that I know there are other people who feel they can be achieved without descent into socialism. Posted by: TBox at May 19, 2003 10:04 AM The Green tree has Red roots. Trade, not aid, will lift millions around the world out of poverty. Posted by: tombo at May 19, 2003 02:38 PM her medical ban on public speaking ? Posted by: snorkel at May 19, 2003 05:32 PM Hay; Say what you want about the idealism which she stands for, I used too all of the time, but times change. She still is a great lady. And her words were dead on. As a former liberal and green party member,( yea I voted Nader, twice), I have come to my senses and looked at all of the BS spoken about my country since 911 and I want to say that the liberal mentality is in Gagaland. Too much effen Zanex! Put the Crack Pipe Down! What makes a liberal think that they are qualified to cast America as some anomolous fascist garbage is beyond my comprehension. I could understand it if you were decrying repuplican witchunting and stains-IMPEACHMENT for gods sakes, but what these liberal mind types have done is far worse! I am just proud that I live in this country and that the forefathers of the constitution had the forsight to build into it enough elbow room for even these self loathing 'Coasties', without so much as a bump in the 'Tommy Franks for Pres' bandwagon. God Save the Queen, God Save the Lady of Liberty! Posted by: Devils chewtoy at May 20, 2003 01:08 AM Jeez, Devil, a two-time Naderite Green Party ex, supporting Tommy Franks! It feels like Easter! Really, good going, way to keep your mind open. Posted by: Buddy at May 20, 2003 07:34 AM I really dont know whether I should take that as a compliment or not. I feel like I was hoodwinked ,twice. I only voted Clinton once and the second vote for Nader put GW in office. I get sick of all the backstabbing done in the beltway. I figured that Nature should be nurtured, since she nurtured us, and life should be sanctified. Too much gratuitous violence. How can you be anti-abortion and pro deathpenalty? How could you be Pro Abortion and Anti Death penalty? I like what the pope said about 'the culture of death'. I also realized that in order for thier to be peace (relative) that the strong should be strong and the weak should be weak. That the strong should be compassionate to the weak and not treat them as beasts. That Values are what is important, not relative to personal whim. Liberty and freedom are worth fighting for. And America is the greatest country ever. Posted by: devils chewtoy at May 20, 2003 08:58 AM If you are fortunate to have friends who are citizens of other country try my little "reality survey" on them. Quesion: "Other than your country of birth name the country who you would most like to see as the most powerful in the world" so far my unofficial results are; 1. U.S. It seems when forced to view the "bleeding obvious" most people feel more comfortable with the U.S. as the world's only super power. Posted by: Jim Hogue at May 20, 2003 01:37 PM It's easy to be pro-life and pro-capital punishment--as easy as it is difficult to be pro-choice and anti-capital punishment. Because a criminal has done something wrong, and a fetus has not. Posted by: Gabriel Hanna at May 22, 2003 06:49 PM Post a comment
