France Begins Limited Evacuation; I.C. Calls For Human Shields

The French government has begun a limited evacuation of the Ivory Coast,according to CNN. In addition:

Hundreds of demonstrators faced off with French troops in Abidjan on Monday after state radio urged protesters to form a “human shield” to protect the house of Ivory Coast President Laurent Gbagbo.

Gbagbo, leader of the world’s biggest cocoa producer, appealed for an end to the anti-French violence which erupted after France destroyed most of the country’s air force in retaliation for the killing of nine French peacekeepers.

French Shoot Down Ivory Coast Warplanes

This from the ABC/AP:

French peacekeepers shot down two Ivory Coast warplanes and a military helicopter Saturday after the aircraft bombed a French position, killing a French soldier, a U.N. military spokesman said.

The clash the biggest confrontation ever between militaries of Ivory Coast and its former colonial ruler happened at the town of Brobo, near Bouake in Ivory Coast’s rebel-held north, U.N. military spokesman Philippe Moreux said.
