French Secure Congo Village on Bunia Outskirts

Reuters:

BUNIA, Congo (Reuters) - French troops trying to end factional violence in Congo's Bunia town seized an abandoned nearby village to tighten security on Wednesday and announced a local militia had agreed to quit Bunia later in the day.

Shortly after dawn at least 40 soldiers backed by five armored vehicles began setting up positions at a Dele village, a ramshackle settlement of crude concrete and mud buildings.

"It is a strong signal for all the militias that the force holds the strategic points around Bunia," said Major Xavier Pons, a spokesman for a French-led international peace force.

Congo Gov't, Rebel Groups Sign Cease-Fire

AP:

The Congolese government and two rebel factions agreed to halt fighting in an eastern region and pull back from newly occupied areas Thursday, hours after a battle for a key town there killed dozens of people.

The cease-fire was signed in neighboring Burundi by the Congolese government, the Rwandan-backed Congolese Rally for Democracy, or RCD, and the government-allied Congolese Rally for Democracy-ML, or RCD-ML.
