Bush: We Are Committed to Helping

FOX:

President Bush said Tuesday the United States, India, Australia and Japan have formed an international coalition to coordinate worldwide relief and reconstruction efforts for the Asian region ravaged by a deadly earthquake and tsunamis.

"We will stand with them as they start to rebuild their communities," Bush said from his Texas ranch in his first comments on the disaster Sunday that so far has killed more than 67,000.

Bush pledged a multifaceted response from the United States that goes far beyond the $35 million initially pledged, including U.S. military manpower and damage surveillance teams in the short term and long-term rebuilding assistance. He also called on Americans to private donate cash to relief organizations to augment the response.

"This has been a terrible disaster. It is beyond our comprehension," the president said.

The Coalition of the Giving.

I note from Tim Blair's site that France has contributed $177,000 Australian Dollars, or about 1/8 of the current total from Amazon.com

I guess with the EU's donation, they figure they "gave at the office".

$35+ million, yet Jan Egeland, the UN undersecretary-general for humanitarian affairs, criticized the United States for its "stingy" contribution to the tsunami relief effort in Asia! What does the United States get for its money by supporting the corrupt U.N.? The U.S. pays more than 20% of the U.N. budget, but gets 100% of the grief from ungrateful so-called diplomats. The U.N. long ceased to serve the interests of the United States or the objectives of other world democracies. The U.N. seems to now exist for only two reasons: To give safe harbor to terrorist and oppressive regimes, and to occasionally meet to condemn Israel.

$35M? not much. you would think usa would try to change world opinion considering we called everyone irrelevant along the way to unilateralism but i guess bush isnt that smart. he even waited 3 days before saying word one. i for one hope 35M is the tip of iceberg considering iraq costs $8M per hour. And you bet I voted for Kerry.

$35M is quite a bit, for STARTERS. It's a credit line to buy goods, never mind the DONATIONS from other sources...such as the American public and other people from all over the world. The U.S. government is also sending ships, miltary help, supplies, etc., in addition to the $35M line of credit, which will surely grow. Here's a clue...it's not what you SAY it's what you DO. Bush is a man of action is DOing what needs to be done. How much money is enough? $1B, $45B, $100B+? No one knows..not even a vote-wastin' college "perfessor"....

it's a shame when people look past such tragedies for political talking points. the silver lining for the prof is a string he can pull at with hopes of making whatever points he wants. of course he voted for kerry.

Egeland criticized the world's richest nations as a group, he did not single out the United States, contrary to the implications I have seen here and elsewhere.

No sooner had the tsunami struck than the bashing of America began for not doing enough to help. Yet after the USA provides all the money, aid, equipment, food, and supplies needed to get Indonesia and the other countries affected by the disaster back on their collective feet, they'll go right back to referring to the USA as The Great Satan.

If anyone wants to send me $35,000,000.00, I swear to God I won't call you stingy.

You bet I vote Badnarik.
