Earthquake: Death Toll Breakdown
  • Sri Lanka: About 1,677 reported dead, up to one million displaced. Massive tidal waves smash coastal villages.
  • India: About 1,100 reported dead. Huge waves leave southern beaches strewn with bodies. Some flooding.
  • Indonesia: 408 reported dead. Towns levelled and bodies wedged in trees by walls of water. Aceh province on Sumatra island was near the Indonesian quake’s epicentre and was the hardest-hit in the vast archipelago.
  • Thailand: 158 reported dead and many missing, mostly in southern islands packed with holidaymakers from around the world at the height of this country’s tourist season.
  • Malaysia: 25 people, including an unknown number of foreign tourists, reported dead. Tens of thousands are temporarily evacuated from hotels and apartments after the Indonesian quake was felt around peninsular Malaysia. No major damage reported.
  • Maldives: Tourist suffered heart attack as floods hit. Much of this low-lying country is reportedly inundated. The country’s only international airport is closed.

Due to go to Hakuraa Club soon. Does anyone know if this resort has been affected at all by the recent earthquake/tidal waves?

Hi Sue. My partner and I are due to travel to the Hakuraa Club on the 3rd April. I have been endlessly searching the web for infomation on the island and it has been quite badly hit. The resort has been closed and it may take 3-4months to rebuild and restore the island. The majority of the water bungalows have been washed away and water covered over half of the island. I hope this helps, I know it's not what you want to hear, but the good news is that there were no casualities. Jen x x x

Hi Sue, My Fiance and I were due to go to the Hakuraa club for our honeymoon on 25th of July this year. As you can imagine we were very concerned that our special holiday would be affected by the recent events so we went to our travel agent yesterday to try and find out what was going on. Unfortunately the news was not good. We have booked with thomas cook and they have advised us that the hotel will take 6 to 8 months to be rebuilt and will be closed for a minimum of 5 months! Obviously we were devestated as with it being our honeymoon we didn't want to risk it being just right however all has not been lost as thomas cook has offered to ammend our booking to another destination of our choice without the usual ammendment fee. My advice is get in touch with your agent as soon as possible as they have put a deadline on the free holiday ammendment offer. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news!

I have spoken with a friend who was a rep here. She has been told the hotel has been devastated, and will need to be completely rebuilt. The hotel manager was killed, and the Thomas Cook rep was badly injured.

I was actually on the Hakurra Club when the Tsunami hit. The only person on the Island to die was the Manager. There was no Thomas Cook Rep on the Island. Several people had quite bad cuts but these were treated at the regional Capital of the Meemu Atol and then again aboard the Pakistani Navy ship which rescued us and took us to Male. As far as I am aware everyone with any serious cuts made a complete recovery, as I saw one woman on Sky news arrive back who was talking to reporters who was one of those which cuts to her legs.

Some websites report that the Tsunami left the Hakurra Club with large amounts of damage. On the morning of the 26th I was having breakfast with my fiance when the Tsunami hit. The worst damage was to the rooms on the Island. These were all still standing as they have almost a concrete shell but doors, wall panels, floor boards, decking was hit very badly along with alot of the walk ways and of course funriture was washed out along with some TV's and aircon units.

The restaurant and bar was not damaged but the bar had all the furniture shoved up into the corner. The restaurant was where everyone stayed until we were moved to the Regional Capital and only sustained as far as I could some minor water damage that came up to our ankles.

While at the hakurra club for only 5 days I can say that this was heaven on earth. The beaches, snorkelling, food and staff were all fantastic. I feel very sorry for the local people as even though this was a worrying time for us as a couple we were physically unhurt and had our life to go back to in the UK.

I do hope that they rebuild the Island as I one day hope to return in the not to distant future.
