Afghan Election News
Ballot boxes poured into vote counting centers across Afghanistan on Monday, while an independent panel will probe allegations the landmark election was marred by fraud. Organizers of the vote are hoping the establishment of the panel _ made up of about three foreign election experts _ will end an opposition boycott that could seriously undermine the winner's ability to rule this war-ravaged nation.

German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder predicted that Afganistan's President Hamid Karzai would be declared the winner in the country's first direct presidential election held just two days ago during a visit to Kabul Monday. "I am of the opinion that he will win it, and in the first round," said Schroeder after a meeting with Karzai.

Afghan officials delayed counting ballots on Monday to deal with complaints of fraud in a historic presidential election, but several candidates appeared to be pulling back from an initial decision to reject the vote.
