Infighting Delays Afghanistan Elections

AP: Infighting Delays Afghanistan Elections

Historic Afghan elections scheduled for September will be delayed because of wrangling among officials and political parties, a senior government official told The Associated Press on Thursday.

Farooq Wardak, a senior member of the country's election management body, said the group would not be able to reach a decision by Friday, the deadline for setting a vote in September.

Under Afghan law, polling day must be set at least 90 days in advance. That makes Friday the last chance to announce a Sept. 30 election.

"Much more consultation is required," Wardak said as he hurried to a meeting with the top U.N. official in Afghanistan, Jean Arnault. "I'm hopeful that next week we'll have a decision."

Heh! Did anyone Truly expect anything else than this?

well with the UN involved it's gonna be tough to accomplish much of anything.

We invited the UN in, because we couldn't handle the load in Afghanistan.

Just to keep the record straight.

Indeed -- and look what we got for our trouble. The masters of competence who brought us the Oil for Food scandal and who are trying their best to ignore Dafur . . . .

I think that replacing the Taliban with the Loya Jirga was real progress. To expect full blown Jeffersonian democracy was a stretch.

A noble effort, and perhaps one that can be attempted in the future when they stop killing each other over each year's opium harvest.

I don't think anyone gave it much of a chance to succeed on hey first try anyway.

We "invited" the UN in because that's what the Loopies said would make a "respected" govt. It was the "right thing to do". That's not the word I want but you get the point. The point is, it was a mistake in Afghanistan and it's a mistake in Iraq. Oh, well, better to just cut from the UN and let them make headquarters in France, that's about where the organization is headed anyway, if current effectiveness is any measure.

We also let our "Allies" take care of the reconstruction in Afghanistan and what has that gotten the Afghan's--just about squat, which is why the U.S. is pretty much going it alone on reconstruction in Iraq. Something actually needed to happen.!

..nanu,nanu."don" time to come home....

Chads: We did not "let" our allies do the reconstruction and related activities in Afghanistan.

We downright Begged them to do it.

Rob: Get a grip.

Sure we did. Everybody and their dog wanted the UN involved and it seemed like such a good idea at the time. We could save a bunch of money by having others do the reconstruction. I think the general idea was, we'd go in a take the bad guys out and the govt's without sufficient military resources would help rebuild the country. Thing is, it didn't work. Money hasn't been forthcoming and contracts are taking forever to let. Why do you think we did the no-bid contracting in Iraq?

Chads: Sorry -- not the way it actually happened.

Once we walked away from the Afghanistan effort to concentrate pretty much everything else on Iraq, the situation in Afghanistan started rapidly to go downhill.

We had to go begging for someone, anyone else to take over the Afghanistan effort while we were otherwise distracted.

As for why we did the no-bid contracting in Iraq, all you really need to do is look at who got them.

Love your spinning effort, though.
