Iran Election News Roundup
  • IranMania: Iran's main armed opposition group, the MKO, accused the Iranian government of rigging, fraud and coercion to inflate turnout figures in Friday's parliamentary elections.
  • Not suprisingly, conservatives are ahead in early vote counts: Official sources said reformists had only managed to win nine of the first 60 seats decided in Friday’s race for the 290-seat Majlis, or parliament, where they had seized a three-quarters majority four years ago.
  • Hardliners see a vote for them as a vote against America: Iran's clerical rulers sought a high turnout to endorse the legitimacy of the Islamic system and, in the words of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, "slap America in the face".
  • Boycott affects elections: Iran's hard-line Islamic rulers claimed Saturday that voters dealt reformers a decisive blow with a strong turnout in disputed parliament elections, but partial returns suggested the pro-reform boycott had an impact.

DEBKA.com is reporting:\

Hundreds of tons of explosives destined for Afghan towns of Herat and Taleban stronghold in Kandahar believed aboard the train whose explosion killed at least 300 Iranians and destroyed five villages Wednesday. According to unconfirmed reports from Tehran, the colossal blast was caused by sabotage.

Anyone find reports of this elsewhere?

Yes, this was reported everywhere a few days ago - of course they didn't get too specific.. all they said was fertilizers.. Of course what was actually on it was a some petroleum or gas, fertilizer and some other compounds - IN ALL VERY LARGE AMOUNTS - whatever they were, they were the components to homemade type bombs...
