Bin Laden Capture Said Close

The Associated Press reports that Joseph Cofer Black, the U.S. State Department coordinator for counterterrorism said in a television interview that the United States and its allies have moved closer to capturing Osama bin Laden in the last two months:

What I tell people, I would be surprised but not necessarily shocked if we wake up tomorrow and he's been caught along with all his lieutenants. That can happen because of the programs and infrastructure in place.

Bin Laden and his top associate, Ayman al-Zawahri, are believed to be hiding some place along the rugged border between Pakistan and Afghanistan. Officials have divulged no solid intelligence about bin Laden's precise whereabouts, and it's not clear if they have any.

What earthly non-political reason is there to ANNOUNCE this to the world? If we are close, then we shouldn't be telling him. This is just stupid.

This is one of the Cookie Pusher's favorite things to do when it looks like the Other Government Agency is going to pull something off. Of course, the CP's hate them and would rather drink the Kool Aid than have the OGA get some monster press.

When asked later Mr. Black will say, "Moi?"

Perhaps it is an effort to get ahead of the inevitable "October Surprise" whining by the left if we do bag Bin Laden in the near future. It makes it ever so slightly less of a surprise. I'm not sure how good a theory this is, but it's better than just assuming they're being foolish.

In fairness, it's not like this isn't exactly where we've been looking for him all along. Since he's apparently been in roughly the same place for the last few years, it seems our military has him pretty effectively pinned, so it's not as though he can go anywhere. If his days are numbered, he probably knows that already without a press release. Or, he'll think the same thing everyone else seems to be - "Ah, just a move to gain political standing without any substance to back it." Which doesn't make it any less political, it just means it isn't as stupid as it might appear on the surface.

I sure hope we catch him soon, but in all honesty, I'm hoping that we don't catch him until after Nov. 2nd. I'm certain that the President can win without it, and I would rather avoid the conspiracy theories.

yawn.

Folks we get this about once a quarter. The Dems say just what Derby said and I have to say Derby's right. If we are close...shut up and get him. Then we'll parade his body through Kabul and then on to Baghdad before severing his head in a nice public way and hang it on the fence around the Whitehouse. Finally, we should issue a press release that simply reads...

next?

Parse the first sentence and see that there is absolutely no information content. Black was asked a question whether the recent arrests would help find OBL and he gave a typical Foggy Bottom answer. This is a non-story.

Well, we haven't had to watch any tapes that were presented to Al-Jazeera lately. So, I suppose maybe we've traced back some of the messengers. One conspiracy theory says that Al Gore was heard yelling behind Bin Laden's speech on the last tape....''he BETRAYED our country!!'' A quick look at Al's flight records led the CIA to a small burg just outside of Kabul. Bin Laden is there dressed as a 6'5'' woman, seen walking about town with a Kennedy and discussing fraud originating from Texas.

Just a rumor; I don't believe it at all. But if capture is imminent, me thinks you all should certainly move completely out of cash and into the market!

Hey, isn't it about time Don or other DNC flag wavers post something about questioning the timing on this?

Don? Don, where are you? Don't let the events of the last 2 weeks discourage you from supporting ABB.

Hello?

How do you "capture" a smear on the wall of a cave in Afghanistan?

First of all, capture bin Laden? This guy won't get captured in the usual way (and I think he's pushing up poppies, so this is a speculate-o-rama story from the get-go). If bin Laden was to get captured, it would be because he was doing something stupid, such as going to visit family, having a truck break down from missed maintenance, or some other human failing on his part. If he's avoided us for this long, we won't catch him by trying harder. We have to get lucky.

Secondly, this sounds like someone wanting to get attention for his writing, not something based on any actual facts. Having some guy make a rosy prediction isn't much of a justification to start mailing juror summonses for Osama's trial. I think this quote sums it up nicely: "Officials have divulged no solid intelligence about bin Laden’s precise whereabouts, and it’s not clear if they have any."

The cynical bastard in me suggests that Bush and Company want to keep Osama in the Unfinished Business column of the electorate mind. It's not something to have Bush do himself, since (just like most of his proposals for a second term) the response would be: what have you done so far?

The skeptical bastard in me just sees some people who like to get in the paper.

Skeptic wins.
