Al-Qaida meets with Central American gang, lawmaker says
[Brownsville, TX Herald] Al-Qaida may have an alliance with a violent Central American gang that has established a presence near the Texas-Mexico border, according to members of the U.S. House Select Committee on Homeland Security.

[A]n El-Salvador-based gang, has met with the terrorist group and may attempt to infiltrate the U.S. border, committee member U.S. Rep. Solomon P. Ortiz, D-Texas, said Thursday...

“We have been in contact with El Salvadoran officials and they have verified that al-Qaida has been active in these gangs,” Ortiz said.

“(The gang members) are all over the place. We know (they) are in the Virginia area and across the border in Matamoros and possibly here.”

Ortiz was joined Thursday by fellow committee members U.S. Rep. Jim Turner, D-Texas, and U.S. Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee, D-Texas, who each expressed their concern for more cooperation among Border Patrol, the FBI and CIA.

They also pleaded with the Bush administration and fellow lawmakers to provide the funding necessary to keep the borders and country safe. The three called for an end to the practice of detaining non-Mexican undocumented immigrants — known as OTMs (other than Mexicans) — from the Middle East, Central America and South America and releasing most of them due to lack of jail space.

Given the choice between cheap labor and protecting us from al Qaeda, Bush has clearly selected the cheap labor option.

The US is not the only international entity that can put together a Coalition of the Willing.

This is certainly a gripe I have with President Bush. We simply MUST control our borders. How long ago was it that the report came up here about the detention of a couple of Middle Eastern folks along the Mexican border? Must we wait until something evil happens in Huston? Dallas? Santa Fe? Phoenix? Tuscon?

NO! Protect the borders. Enforce the laws. We are at war and the oceans no longer protect us.

On the problem of border control, we need to find out whether the reason is (1)can't. (2)won't. or (3) don't know how. However the problem will eventualy have to be addressed and corrected and forget about profiling or civil rights................ Ron from Arkansas.

On the problem of border control, we need to find out whether the reason is (1)can’t. (2)won’t. or (3) don’t know how.

IMHO, the answer is definitely "(2)won’t." I base that on the actions and statements of various administration officials. For instance, in the first five months of this year, just one company in the whole U.S. was fined for immigration violations. If the administration wanted to reduce illegal immigration they could certainly do so. A reduction in the demand would lead to a reduction in those streaming over the border. That would tend to make crossers stand out more, make the job of the Border Patrol easier, and reduce the ease with which people can obtain phony documents.

Like I said above, it appears that a supply of cheap labor is more important than border security.

For more on this issue, see D.C. hamstrings border officers: Despite new anti-terrorism demands, DHS freezes payrolls, frees illegals. That has some internal memos that aren't too flattering.
