Iran Seizes 3 British Navy Vessels
(Associated Press) Tehran — "Iran said Monday it has seized 3 British naval vessels in Iranian waters and arrested 8 crew members. The Royal Navy acknowledged that it had lost contact with three small patrol boats on a routine mission in the waterway between Iraq and Iran." Well, isn't that a nice thank-you for Britain's accomodationist policy toward Iran and its nuclear program. FYI, The vessels in question were small river/coastal patrol boats seized in the narrow Shatt al-Arab waterway between Iran and Iraq, hence the small crew totals. The Sky News UK report notes:
Well, I should hope so. A patrol boat with no weapons and no maps would be a pretty ridiculous thing.

Are you for real?
Posted by: Happeh at June 21, 2004 03:30 PM Nonsense. The SBS is the best in the world. They can and do give lessons to the SeALs. Maybe the patrol boats were picked up after they did the drop off. What is more likliy is that they were on a standard anti-terrorist patrol and were caught in a squall and when the rain lifted found them selves surrounded and outnumbered. What ever, the Iranians planned this. The tactics alone show that. I have to wonder why they choose this time and way to start a war with the UK. Wrtecherd thinks that Blair won't blink. I'm not so sure. If he does, the UK will deserve what they get. Never back off from a bully, it just encourages them to continue their actions. Posted by: ableiter at June 21, 2004 05:13 PM Not sure Britain has any room to complain. During the run up to OIF, Saddam deeded the entire waterway back to Iran, hoping to garner support from Iran in particular and Islam in general.
Posted by: jeffers at June 21, 2004 06:56 PM Three boats, eight men are just crew. The boats are either Rigid Raiders or inflatables.SBS would have gone at night, probably just what it says. The Iranians are livid because of the condemnation of their nuclear program. Posted by: Peter at June 21, 2004 09:35 PM The boats are made by Boston Whaler and carry four.
Posted by: Peter at June 21, 2004 10:03 PM The news reports say these guys are normally based at Faslane on the Clyde. This makes them sound more like Commachio than SBS. Posted by: Delboy at June 23, 2004 05:17 AM Post a comment
