Leaders React to Yassin Death
Leaders around the world condemned the killing of Hamas leader Yassin. Jack Straw: It is unacceptable, it is unjustified and it is very unlikely to achieve its objective. Dominique de Villepin, (France) Foreign Minister: [S]uch acts can only feed the spiral of violence EU: This is very, very bad news for the peace process. Japan: Our country strongly requests that the Israeli government exercise maximum self-restraint and seeks to calm the situation. Hamas: Yassin is a man in a nation, and a nation in a man. And the retaliation of this nation will be of the size of this man. U.S.: The United States urges all sides to remain calm and exercise restraint. Posted by: Achillea at March 22, 2004 09:50 AM Palestinian terrorists can blow up buses, ports and restaurants and kill and injure hundreds of men woman and children solely because they are Jewish and that does not harm the peace process. Sheik Yassin and many other Palestinian leaders can call for expulsion of the Jews from Israel, depict Jews in the vilest ways and encourage Palestinian society to acts of suicidal terrorism in the name of religion and that does not harm the peace process. But when Israel attacks the terrorist groups and the terrorist leaders and builds a wall to try and prevent terrorist attacks, the whole world suddenly agrees that Israel's actions harm the peace process. We also ask that you avoid the extensive use of profanity, racist terms (neither of which we consider civil or respectful), and other boorish language. We reserve the right to delete any comment, and to prohibit you from commenting on this site, if we feel you have broached this policy. As a courtesy, we will first send you an email noting a violation so you understand the boundaries. This will occur only once, however, and should we ban you from our comment forums we expect that ban to be permanent. We also will frown upon those who suggest that we ban other individuals for voicing unpopular opinions, should those opinions be voiced in a civil and respectful manner.
