Terrain Map of Battle Area
Thanks to our very informative reader Jeff for these maps, which he made. From Jeff: Wana is at top right, for distance scale it is about 15km from Wana to Kaloosha (or Kalusha, take your pick). Dashed red overlay is the Afghanistan-Pakistan border, solid red overlay is 4 wheel drive type road networks, and image color is falsely induced by NASA. Overlays are approximate. Posted by: David at March 18, 2004 11:15 PM I don't see even one single McDonalds. This IS remote! Posted by: Tom at March 19, 2004 10:19 AM Fabulous. Much better coverage than networks.
Posted by: Jim at March 19, 2004 10:26 AM Thanks for the great map of the battle zone around Kaloosha, Jeff.
Posted by: john at March 19, 2004 07:20 PM No micky D's but if you load it in photoshop and blow it to the max you will see a Starbucks just north of the intersection. Bring me back a latte please! Posted by: ableiter at March 19, 2004 08:58 PM The red dashed line running along the ridge to the west (left) of Oba Sar is the Afghan border, I think, a distance of about 3,000 meters linear. The map appears to be oriented north to south. That means allied forces are practically looking down on the Oba Sar. No way out north, however, there might be a breakout or escape route south along the valley at the foot of the hills. Twenty clicks will take them to a road network and eventually to Khan Khot in the direction of Baluchistan. Posted by: wretchard at March 21, 2004 01:23 AM Post a comment
