They may have won this battle, but as long as AB&F is open on time, we are winning the war...

Incredibly STUPID.

One I doubt the people who Mall walk in the early
morning fit the profile of a terrorist

Two they WOULD make a good pool of sharp observers if amything suspicous should come up.

Nothing wrong with being cautious, but hey, this isn't the Super Bowl, either. If it's a question of terrorists attacking a mall to leave maximum carnage in their wake, would they hit a virtually empty mall, devoid of shoppers?

This measure stikes me as ineffective and symbolic as the bureaucratic hoops they have us jump through at the airport. I have nothing against safety measures, provided they PRODUCE RESULTS. Malls in Wisconsin are not the first targets Ishmel the Martyr is thinking about. They may not make the Top 5000.

I would gain as much additional security by not allowing my kids to go to school until 10 each morning or parking 2 blocks away lest I accidentally bring a bomb home attached to my car.

Reality is the first victim.

No, taking precautionary measures in a time of war, even silly useless ones like this, does not amount to losing.

It does show that the bad guys are managing to have some effect, but even on that count, it's pretty minimal if this is a representative example. Considering the sheer number of overly reactionary fools we have in a position to make a bone-headed decision like this I'm surprised it's not more common. Given that it isn't more common, I think the terrorists are making a pretty piss-poor showing.

I fail to see how this measure would help to prevent a terrorist attack. Combine this mall nonsense with Congressman Shays advising New Years Eve celebrants that he would avoid New York's Times Square and I wonder what happened to that good old American defiance.

what in the hell is happening to our country?

Posted by: x at January 16, 2004 12:02 PM

Maybe they're doing it for terrorists as boneheaded as they themselves are, the kind who'd rather blow up a mall when there were only a handfull of people around rather than during target rich peak hours.

Go figure.

Actually, I was talking about this very thing with my husband the other day. If the terrorists wanted to really scare the crap out of us, all they would have to do is start doing suicide bombings around malls and restaurants. Scattered all over the US, Palestinian style. That would terrify the whole US and not just the people who live in select cities (NY, LA, Washington, etc).

Having too-vast retail management experience, it seems much more likely that they wanted to trim hours to cut costs in the current economy. The earliest hours are the least profitable and would be the first to go. They may have used a security excuse to avoid criticism, because there will be corresponding labor cuts.

JulieB, one of the first things I thought about after 9/11 was the possiblity of terrorist attacks on smaller, random soft targets that inflict relatively few casualties. Such attacks would be more effective at inflicting terror, but they have not gone that route. I think it's because they prefer fewer high-profile attacks that make headlines, or it's possible they just don't fully understand the American psyche. Another possibility is that they don't want to scare us TOO much, because they know the power we wield, and each attack on American soil moves more people over to the pro-war side. If 80% of us lived each day in fear, we would be more willing to compromise our peaceful nature in a way that would not be comfortable for our enemies.

The People still have it but I wonder about the media and some of our political leaders/hiders.

Some strange feeling seized me when I read your comment, Dan.
Does Dan's post look strange here?
No. So Dan, what is the point in your comment?
There always has to be some point.
Nothing personal tho.
