Riyadh Bombings Update: At Least 28 Dead, Mostly Children

As many as 28 have been killed and at least 100 injured in the bombings reported here. Many of the dead and wounded are children.

The explosions happened at a time when many of the adult residents were away from their homes because of the Ramadan observances, leaving a large number of children in the compound.

The Al-Muhaya compound, where the explosions took place, is an affluent residential neighborhood housing mostly Arabs. Only four people who live in the compound are not Arabs.

Do you think the throne is on shakey ground?
I wonder if the royal family's army is taking any action yet. It's hard to find news from there.

RIYADH: Saudi Interior Minister Prince Nayef and some other Saudi royals have private homes near the housing compound ripped apart by suspected al-Qaeda suicide bombers in Riyadh on Sunday, a Western diplomat said.
"This is an area which has several private residences for members of the Saudi royal family. It was about half a mile from one of the houses of Prince Nayef," the diplomat said.

Saudi Arabia, birthplace of Islam, is battling a surge in Islamist violence. Supporters of al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden have threatened both Saudi rulers and Western expatriates who hold key jobs in the kingdom, the world's biggest oil exporter.
