Powell plans visit to Syria
Secretary of State Colin Powell is planning to travel to Syria "to have very candid and straightforward discussions" with President Bashar Assad and others.Posted by Michele at April 17, 2003 08:25 AM | TrackBack Comments
kick his ass, assad! Posted by: top ranks at April 17, 2003 08:53 AM A smart move. As David Warren pointed out, if we send a lot of blustery rhetoric in Assad's direction and don't eventually back it up with another war, we stand to lose much of the credibility and respect we gained from beating the hell out of Saddam. Thus, unless we're fully committed to going to war with Syria, which I don't think we're ready to commit to for a lot of good reasons, we should opt to speak softly towards the Syrians while making it clear to them in our discussions that a big stick is there to back it up.
