U.S. intelligence plays down al Qaeda claim

CNN:

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- A group calling itself an al Qaeda affiliate claimed responsibility Sunday for attacks on U.S. troops in Iraq, but a U.S. intelligence official said the claim should be taken "with a huge grain of salt."

The videotaped statement took credit for recent attacks on behalf of a previously unknown group, The Armed Islamic Movement of al Qaeda Organization -- Al Fallujah Branch. It also warned Iraqis to expect "a strike that will permanently break the back of America" in the coming days.

The tape warned that the group -- and not followers of ousted Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein -- is behind recent attacks that have killed 31 U.S. troops since President Bush declared an end to major combat in Iraq on May 1.

The unnamed sources in "American Intelligence" are taking on a sinister pall. It is a well established fact that there are Jihadis from the surrounding Arab countries who are waging attacks on our troops in Iraq. They poured into Afghanistan after we routed the Taliban, and now they've done the same thing in Iraq. But, here we have a group of Jihadis that are frustrated with the media's spin that angry Iraqis are orchestrating these attacks. Typical terrorists --- they want credit for their barbarous acts. Skepticism from unnamed "American intelligence" sources is either vacuous ignorance or gratuitous posturing.

In recent days we've seen a great deal of cooperation between "unnamed sources" in the CIA and the media witch hunt against George Bush over the forged uranium documents. Could it be that these "unnamed sources" are trying to suppress the truth in Iraq in an attempt to undermine the Bush administration in the eyes of the American public? Many Democrats feel that they can use the attacks on American troops in Iraq as a political football. This is a sick and shameless perversion of what these soldiers died for.

Typical democrat tactics. Just as weasely as the terrorists. They both seem to have better reporting by the media than the President and his administration. Pretty sick.

Just makes me hate terrorists and democrats more each day. It's pretty much an even match between them to see who can bring this country down first.

Did you see the ignorant bitch on the news representing the socialist party( same as democrat party) in Washington state? She thinks her campaign donors should be kept confidential for fear of retaliation........You know, if you live in this country and you have to fear for your life because of your political beliefs.......It should tell you something. We have the highest tolerance for fools in this country, If you go beyond that limit, you are anti-American and not wanted here. You should get the f--k out of Dodge as quick as you can.

Why would someone in this country think that they can completely change it?? Just move to a liberal socialist country .

I accept flaming, VISA, and MasterCard. Will respond later. Got to go to work so my employees and I can pay for all the liberal programs.

Jeff B,

More like so your employees can pay for this Iraqi occupation and war....Government programs pale in comparison. Get a grip!

This admin is out of control and will be fixed in 2004.

Mike, BWAAWAWAWAHHH! Hold that thought, and your breath, will you? Good.

Mike

You're right re this admin: In 2004, thank God, it will be fixed IN PLACE for another 4 much needed years.
Lots more work to do to repair 8 years' worth of Clinton sabotage.

The alleged organization has a name the length of a footbal field and promises to break the back of the American occupation.

This shows two things; They come from the Baghdad Bob School of Journalism, and they regard the length of an organization's name as being some kind of phallic equivalent.

A huge grain of salt indeed. Hillary has more credibility.

Mike, the flaming liberal said, "More like so your employees can pay for this Iraqi occupation and war...."

Mike....your ignorance stands out like a truckers flare on a dark night. Let the terrorists come to the country you move to (because we don't want them here), and see what effects it has. They must be kept out and eliminated at all cost. Reguardless of the cost.

Mike, the flaming liberal said, "Government programs pale in comparison."

Uhhhhh.....yeah...right. Before the Iraqi liberation, what was all that money spent on??? Was it just going into an account in case we ever decided to liberate Iraq??? Dumbass.

Mike the flaming liberal said, "Get a grip!"

Like the ones you've got on your and your significant other's penises?

Mike the flaming liberal said, "This admin is out of control and will be fixed in 2004."

Yeah, when we get rid of all the liberal asswipes that are embarrassing this country and trying to distract the Bush Administration from doing it's job.

Posted by: Jeff B at July 15, 2003 01:48 PM

JeffB,
it must be part of the liberal(dem) party constitution.
"embarass you country"
The liberals here in Canada have done a fine job of that as well.

maybe western Canada should get together with some USA states and form a new country, with "there shall be no liberals allowed' in the first line of the constitution. Lots of other things that I know that I would put in the constitution of a new country as well...

YES WE ALL KNOW IRAQ WAS THE HOTBED OF INTERNATIONAL TERRORISM :) LOL Keep believing W's weak ass ties with Iraq and Al Qaeda, even though the CIA will have none of it....

Shrub has a great track record with foreign policy and it is finally starting to catch up with him in the eyes of the American public. People are finally starting to open their eyes and see that the "emperor has no clothes" which was part of a recent MSNBC OP/ED article....

Furthermore, let us neocon jackasses totally overblow and overestimate this 9/11 thing until we are a bankrupt nation. Great Idea Jeff B. But like you said whatever the cost.... Jeff B. ever hear of responsible and moderate reaction to a crisis. You are crying that the sky is falling and are willing to do anything to stop it. Step outside and get a breath of fresh air the country is relatively safe always has been pre/post 9/11. Things are going to be ok Jeff, things are going to be ok :) LOL

You guys crack me up.... Dean in 2004!

Posted by: Mike at July 16, 2003 12:59 AM

responsible and moderate reaction to a crisis... like clinton after the uss cole?
responsible and moderate reaction to a crisis... like clinton after the embassy bombings?
boy, were the bad guys served a deterent then. 9/11 couldnt have happened. the terrorists knew the repercussions.
as for the hotbed of international terrorism (fuck the all caps) it aint canada. it aint a remodeled afghanistan. but a good breeding population was taking hold in a country where workers were encouraged to take friday afternoons off to holler death to america and death to bush. and as much as i am sure that mike's house sounds the same way on any given night, its not right, and i am so damned tickled that we didnt have some dink for a prez call for a response that would make mike happy. dean should be embarassed by some of his supporters

As I am a firm believer in the concept of "no taxation without representation" and believing that the reverse is also true I shall attempt to avoid the domestic issues raised above. ( The last time my former regiment visited Washington DC we indulged in a little vandalism and political arson). The one happy event of that particular war was the complete failure of the Royal Navy and Royal Artillery, to achieve a relatively simple fire mission. the result an inspiring anthem, which has inspired free men the whole world over.

On a more pertinent note, I have noticed the considerable furore raised over the discussion of likely links between Al Quaeda and the Saddam Baathist regime, which have been simplified into links with "International terrorism".

May I make a few points,
1. Al Quaeda is not the only International terror group that represents a threat both real and potential to the West.

2. The Saddam regime did actively support terrorist groups in the ME. Groups that have attacked western targets and interests.

3. POV. I cannot believe that the groups that were supported by Saddam did not and would not share their resources with those groups linked to/forming part of the Al Quaeda organisation. Either in terms of funding, intelligence or the use of training facilities.

4. There is a strand in Eastern (and Western Culture) that can be simply expressed as the enemy of my enemy is my friend. Saddam would have recognised OBL as a real threat to both his own regime and a potent weapon with which to irritate his greatest enemy.

I think that part of the confusion here is the desire for some people to be oversimplistic, both within the media , politics and (dare I say it) blogging world, to oversimplify. Terrorist=Al Quaeda, Saddam had links with terrorists therefore he had links with Al Quaeda. That MAY be true, but not nescessarily. One can hardly blame professional analysts for failing to give unequivocal support to such a poorly worded proposition.

Dean in 2004. Hmmm. Interesting, isn't it?

He has many geeks propping him up, with fancy technobubbles to scrub him all nice and shiny. I'm rubbing my hands with glee at the thought of verbally jousting with these talkin' heads...

Woowdoggies.

/Terrorist=Al Quaeda, [...] That MAY be true, but not nescessarily. One can hardly blame professional analysts for failing to give unequivocal support to such a poorly worded proposition./

I don't have time to chide Max about his wording problems. My contention is that we've seen analysts throw professionalism to the wind and leak information and views that are highly partisan. Now we may be hearing the same voices play down links to al Queda and the current guerilla attacks. Such links are not tenuous or convenient simplification. Rather they are very inconvenient to those who would paint this conflict as groundless.

However, I do not claim that all resistance in Iraq is coming from al Queda. There are elements of the previous regime, jihadis recruited from other countries (fedayeen), Iranian agents, Syrian agents, and al Queda.

TROUBLE,

Please chide away, I have had a few problems over this new sport of blogging.
Firstly for the last few months I've been in a very warm place, and my links with this arena (and many other sources of information, have been subject not so much to a diet as starvation rations, Most sincerely, if I have erred please offer me a corrective view.

QUESTION TO MY LEARNED FRIENDS.

Who is Dean?
What is LOL? I hope it means Lots of Love>
Bubba and seth if you would be so kind I'd really like a contact point.

My children are playing on the lawn, the beer is tasting "wonderfully refreshing", and the blogging is good, what a difference a "day" week makes!!

Your last paragraph I fully support, with one addition, just before he "beat feet" Saddam emptied the prisons, not of political prisoners, but of rapists, thugs , murderers and every other form of low life that ANY society would seek to control.

Posted by: Max at July 16, 2003 01:22 PM

Max - Obviously the max is not as in MadMax. LOL.

Laughing Out Loud.

Howard Dean is a Talking Head 'running' for President as a Democrat, with a stable of Techobabble geeks helping him in the Blogosphere. Liberal minded, Max.

The 'criminal element' is just as pissed off that order is being restored as the 'outies'. Your 'list' of unhappy campers is close enough...

Max(who is everywhere);

Point of contact?
