U.S. Toll in Iraq Nears '91 War Deaths

[AP via Yahoo]

The Pentagon on Tuesday raised its count of Americans killed by hostile fire in Iraq since the war began in March to 143, a figure that approaches the 147 killed in the 1991 Gulf WarWhen President Bush (news - web sites) declared major combat operations had ended on May 1, the number killed in action stood at 114. Since then, guerrilla-style attacks have taken another 29 American lives, and Bush as well as U.S. military commanders have said the war is not yet over.

"Rough road behind, rough road ahead," Gen. Tommy Franks, who commanded U.S. forces in the war, said Monday at a ceremony in which he handed over command of the operation to Gen. John Abizaid.

In 91, there wasn't a ground advance.
So considering that the whole country was taken, the death toll is LOW!!!!

meanwhile, back in LA, the death toll passes 300 murdered.....

Not as bad as it was in Truman's war when the US 8th Army was defeated at the Chongchon River.

I notice the casualties are all Army and on another site was told that there is still a significant Marine presence. What was disturbing was the Army and Marine rules of engagement were different.

The Marine were far more aggressive and the Army's tied its troops up in knots. For instance, Army personnel carrying a weapon could carry more than two magazines.

The upshot was a feeling that the Army was quickly perceived by the locals as easy marks.

Hope this isn't true, but I got out of Afghanistan before the conventional Army arrive and was glad of it.

Don't need no stinkin' flakjacket for PT.
