In The Absence Of News, Entertainment

If you haven’t noticed, the past several days have been positively slow for news on the stories we follow. We expect today to be no different, and given the generally playful tone in our comments today, Michele and I thought perhaps it might be time to have some fun.

After all … it’s a beautiful, warm spring day here in Philadelphia and New York, and while we’re certainly hard at work, it’s a day that just BEGS for distraction.

So here’s the proposal: You likely noticed that last weekend we added an “Evildoer” photo and snarky caption to the top-right-column of this page. We’d like to change that snarky caption, and thought today may be a fine day for a caption contest. The “rules”:

The photo will stay the same

No obscenity or vulgarity (this is, after all, a quasi-family site)

The caption should in some way glorify our contributors or the idea behind the Command Post (i.e., citizen triangulation of the media). If you want to single out a particular contributor for glorification, that’s fine, but Michele and I recuse ourselves (we get enough glory as it is ... if that's what you call whatever it is we get)

Post your suggestions in the comments to this post; we’ll select a winner in the next day or so and update the page accordingly!

Saddam Photo:

Syrias President Assad says he doubts there ever was such a person as "Saddam Hussein," and that it was all a big plot involving the extensive use of CIA bio-engineered body doubles, saying that "it's illogical that they all could look so similar that even their mistresses couldn't tell them apart." Above body double Ahmed Hashim smiles, admitting that he did fool one or two of the other guys mistresses, including the bosses.

Do you realize the peril we face in Iraq?

Are you aware that the Baathist party seems to be coordinating a series of hit and run attacks against US troops in Iraq? Are you aware that of the 168 men we've lost in the war, 31 of them have been in May?

Are you aware that the timing and rhythm of the attacks appear to mimic the strategy of Giap in Vietnam? First they feint, later they will strike a big blow. This is like the small strikes of the VC, then the feint at Khe Sanh, then the big blow in the Tet Offensive. Sure, we won that battle, but it destroyed public confidence in the war. Sure, we could have escalated beyond what we did, but after Tet '68, the public lost confidence in the war. If I were Saddam, I would be planning my own "Tet" offensive.

I don't want to sound paranoid, only cautious. We haven't found the chemical or biological weapons yet. Maybe Saddam has them somewhere, and will use them at a moment of his choosing.

I've seen rumors that the Baathists have picked July 27th for their counterstrike. It's the anniversary of the founding of their party.

Regardless of the truth of that rumor, the dangling, hanging-on nature of the resistance in Iraq is cause for serious concern. Recently, we sent another 20,000 troops into Iraq.

On the up side, we know of no country that is supplying the Baathist resistance. This distinguishes it from Vietnam.

Still, if I were running the postwar operation in Iraq, I would do all I could to ramp up security. It is time to utterly crush the opposition, while it is still small.

This war is not over. I do not see that peace has been restored, or that the underlying causes of Iraq's tyranny are removed. We need to completely root out the Baathist thugs. We need to make sure Iran's agents and saboteurs are expelled. If we fail in this, eventually Iraq will revert to tyranny. Even if things go wrong, we probably won't lose anywhere near the 58,000 men we lost in Vietname, but every loss is a tragedy, and it would behoove us to achieve all of our war aims.

I see far too much triumphalism before we've crossed the finish line.

We have our finest scientists working in bio-semis on the Syrian border perfecting the most horrific, genetically engineered army of villains the world has ever known.

Each of these universal Sadayeen will have my smile, Kim Jong-il's haircut and stature, will speak French, will have Uday's libido, and Assad's ability to convince people they do not exist.

He will be bio-engineered not to have grid coordinates and to be capable of living underground forever only communicating via tapes.

Once we have set our bio-engineered Sadayeen in motion, it is our initial assessment, infidels, that you are all going to die.

Well, while I was googling around, I can across this;
(who the hell was baghdad bubba?) wasn't me.

The reason I was searching google, was to find the name of the prison where Uday killed all those people in a day and got daddy his new teeth(dentures) from the lost and found box..... so I could add it to my suggestion for the smiling Saddam pic, and win the prize of just being silly and witty.
It is nice to see that COMMAD POST is showing up on google searches, LOL

Posted by: Bubba at May 30, 2003 04:06 PM

Andrew Hagen;
I agree 100%, the war is not over.
But, just pick a funny caption for the saddam and bob pics, and post your concerns on a better thread.
I share the same concerns, but this thread is just for some fun

I'm amazed no-one corrected me, it was Qusay not Uday that did the prison murder thing.

Anyways, for the saddam smiling pic, it should be

"look at theses nice dentures QUSAY found for me in the Abu Ghraib prison Lost and found box".

Can't say -- I switched to reading the 'print' versions when you went to this new format. That's still not as easy to deal with as the old format but it got rid of a lot of the excess clutter.
