Lebanon recovers £300m of Saddam's stash
Ananova - Lebanon's central bank has located and secured £307 million in Iraqi funds, a Treasury official said. David Aufhauser, general counsel in the Treasury Department, said the disclosure by Lebanon was a sign of the progress being made in the worldwide search for Saddam's assets.Posted By Gabriel Syme (Samizdata) at May 15, 2003 07:17 AM | TrackBack Did their Syrian masters give them permission to "recover" the funds? Syria, you must really want that oil pipeline on again. Posted by: Original Mark at May 15, 2003 08:18 AM'In Iraqi funds'......what does it amount to in US funds??? 79 cents??? Posted by: Jeff B at May 15, 2003 08:34 AMThe header had the pound sign. So it's substancial at todays exchange rate if that was correct. Posted by: TerryP at May 15, 2003 08:56 AMJeff: figures such as that, when quoted in pounds or dollars, reflect the value in those currencies, regardless of the actual currency used in the deposit. From what I have read, Saddam was mostly interested in 'hard' currency, mostly US dollars, when he was moving funds out of country. Posted by: Jrm at May 15, 2003 01:10 PMPost a comment
