Yet Another Mass Grave, Est. 3,000 Bodies

This is becoming a familiar and sobering refrain. From the New York Times:

When the buses and vans started coming twice a day in April 1991 to disgorge their loads of victims, Hassan Maki tried to keep a rough count of the Shiites who were disappearing before his eyes.

They were driven down a dirt road into the salt marshes next to a brick factory. They were forced out of the vehicles. Mr. Maki could barely see them in the distance because of the haze that often lies over the marshes here in central Iraq, about 50 miles south of Baghdad.

Then the gunfire began. The figures wilted onto the ground. A bulldozer came to cover them with earth in what appears today to be one of the largest mass graves uncovered in Iraq, with an estimated 3,000 bodies found. After the bodies were disposed of, the sequence started over with another busload.

This is disturbing to read. Even though you know it happens, it is hard to read nonetheless.

Hey, yesterday we were told on good authority by our pro-dictatorship posters that these people were likely killed by American bombs. Or that, during the cold war, a struggle with an Empire that killed uncounted scores of millions don't forget, the US was as bad or worse. Or that these killings were justified. And for that reason, we should just have let the killing continue. We listened to the old-boy network of France, Russia, and yes, even Poppy, and stopped before we should have out of respect for the "legitimacy" of the Iraqi govt. Of course the left here doesn't remember that keeping Saddam in power, and slapping sanctions on the Iraqis was their idea.

Never forget that the left is not against killing, just against the US, whatever it does.

Elvis,

If things like this are not disturbing, then you've lost your humanity.

Saddam was such a monster.

If you want to lose a good night's sleep, read about what's been going on in North Korea wrt food, the gulag, etc. Utterly sick.

Someone do the math for me:
4400 DAYS/D = ? where D = number of graves discovered. Are we there yet? I was kinda hoping for 666...

I don't see any comment from HOUSTON on this string......What about those children HOUSTON? How come you didn't care about them? they are DEAD thanks to people like you.

Who cares about WMD?

UNSC Resolution 688 states that it is necessary for the peace and security of the region for Iraq to end the repression of its civilian population. This is the same peace and security which UNSC Resolution 687 put forth as a condition of the ceasefire with Iraq.

IOW, these mass graves alone are not only moral justification for the war with Iraq, they are a legal justification in that the US's occupation was in compliance with UN resolutions.

Gabriel really opened a pandora's box when he showed me the UN Resolutions, didn't he? I'm prolly gonna go on like this for a half dozen more posts.

On CNN, they're reporting Physicians for Human Rights and the London-based group Human Rights Watch are upset. Because of the killings? No. They're upset that security at the site is lax. Another case of us just kicking back while these lwaless relatives loot another historic Iraqi gravesite. Us bastards.

Oh, and don't forget that Saddam's Hell is better than America's Paradise.

I think we should send all those PeaceNiks, that were all against this war, over to exhume the bodies and find out, for themselves, what a great guy Suddam was! Let them console the relatives and see if they can put a spin on the death of their loved one?

there was this blog I visited, can't remember the name, but the picture is in my mind, a pioneer woman, leather dress on, was her logo.
At Any rate, there was a link from there, that had the Memoirs of a "humand shield" protestor.
A real wake up reality check.
I hope regular bloggers can remember and find it. and post it here.

I will take the silence of the defenders of Saddam on this thread as a token of shame on their part.

How come there are NO Colateral damage or
coalition body counts ? Can't they count That
High ?? why is 20 the max ??

Posted by: VF at May 14, 2003 04:44 PM

Human Shields as Human Disinterrers is a wonderful idea.

Posted by: Kabar at May 14, 2003 06:15 PM

Be a human shield VF, I dare you.
I bet you won't, because you don't have the guts.
You enjoy the freedom and security that people fought and died for, it's not likely you'd put your life on the line for that.
As I have said countless times, it's people like you who protest everything, but when your life and freedoms are on the line, you turn tail and run, and ask, "why didn't someone do anything about this"

what you fail to see, is there are brave young soldiers who do put their lives on the line to protect, and do something about freedom for all, something you will never have the guts to do.

Posted by: Bubba at May 14, 2003 06:58 PM

OOOPS!
I should have said, 'brave young men and women'
I know plenty of military women who give 110% and are just as good, if not better than the millitary men.

THere have been collateral damage body counts, and they are working on more, just dont count on the number going much above that of a couple of weeks (1500) of the "bussiness as usual" Saddam regime. And the more they learn, the lower the count goes.
