Iraqi women fear religious restrictions

They are used to travelling alone, getting university educations, working outside the home, and going with bare heads, and they are nervous about the possibilities of a religious government in what has been a fairly secular country.

They oughta be nervous about it.

Great way for a country to remain Third World is for it to greatly restrict the freedoms and opportunities of half its citizens.

USA offers political asylum to any citizen of forign countries whos political views we consider oppressive. WHY do we not offer asylum (protection and citizenship) to women of countries who are legally oppressed by thier rulers. Women are the most oppressed "minority" in the world today both in horrific level of degredation by thier oppressors and by sheer unbelievable volume. All women in the world who would ask should be allowed to transport to and protection from the USA. Our nation may not be perfect when it becomes to equal treatment of the sexes but we are way WAAAY ahead of the game compared to most of the world, and we are going to get better. An example needs to be made of one of these countries, particarly Saudi Arabia or Pakistan or parts of Africa (allies i know but look at the abuse of women), if a nation suddenly lost the majority of its female population then that nation is doomed to extinction within 1 generation. The men of oppressive regimes need a wake up call.

Keep the dream alive sisters.

These women need to vote their self- interest when the time comes, not how the clerics tell the to vote.

I don't know if women in Iraq were allowed to vote.

if not, then them now having a vote would have tremendous impact on what kind of government Iraq will have.

Why can't women just abort male babies.. that would smarten up those backwards male assholes.

Posted by: Original Mark at May 5, 2003 01:18 PM

OM; in most asian countries its the oposite, they abort the female babies in order to hold out for male children (who considered to be worth more). Also understand that there arent very many countries with legalized abortion, the usa is one of the few. And please lets not turn this into an abortion issue, thats a whole different web page.

Ronin,
Huh? The great majority of countries have legal abortion. And I don't know why you picked "asian" countries that prefer to abort females. Female fetuses in the US are more likly to be aborted as well.

Hmmm. So... to prevent an Iranian-style Khomeniist Shi-ite theocracy in Iraq, all we have to do is give guns to the women?!....

Well the women of Iraq are gonna end up being the main voteing body. While male voters may be split between a secular and a Islamic government......the women will all vote in force for the secular/democratic society.

Everyone has these bleak outlooks for Iraq and fail to realize its gonna be damn near impossible for an Islamic government to be elected.

JJ i gathered my information from reading a Time article on the subject back in the 90's, the only exception being Japan (natch).

Shock we can only hope.
