'Comical Ali surrenders'
Sky News - Iraqi spin doctor Mohammad Said al-Sahhaf - the man dubbed Comical Ali - is alive and well in Baghdad, it is reported.

And he wants to give himself up.

But US forces have refused to arrest him because he is not on the American list of the regime's 'most wanted', an Arabic newspaper published in London has reported.

Asharq Al-Awsat said the man who famously denied the presence of US troops in Baghdad had wanted American troops to "protect him".

The paper said al-Sahhaf was living with his auntie on Palestine Street in the capital and had sent relatives to negotiate his surrender with US troops.

Obviously, Sky News standards are slipping. If they read CP, they'd know it's Baghdad Bob, not some comical Ali...

In England he is known as Comical Ali after Chemical Ali.

Poor Ali, can't even get arrested, nobody wants him, it must be a blow to his ego

Posted by: Bubba at April 30, 2003 12:48 PM

Hey Baghdad Bob. Email me at this address. I see book deal and lecture circuit.
How about a working title like:
Bombs, baghdad and the evening news.
Or
Information and the infidel.
True Lies was taken.

Posted by: TerryP at April 30, 2003 01:02 PM

He should turn himself in to the people of NYC, we'll take real good care of his ass.

Posted by: Silvertrain22 at April 30, 2003 01:02 PM

This is another re-reporting of the same al-Sharq al-Awsat story, which I haven't seen confirmed anywhere. That Americans refused to accept his surrender because he's not on their list seems absurd to me, although not inconceivable.

Posted by: Otter at April 30, 2003 01:03 PM

Why in the hell doesn't he just pop into the Palestine?

Posted by: Dave Dube at April 30, 2003 01:07 PM

has it slipped everyones mind?....didnt he get 200,000 dollars from the reporters the morning he disapeared?.a fee for the glorious state of iraq?...
shit the guy really was'nt funny he was PATHETIC, IGNORANT, and down right SCUMY.
the reason he wants to surrender is that the iraqi people will prbably tear his fricken head off. if they dont hang him from a lampost. and one more thought maybe the administartion is hopeing the little WORM will lead them to saddam....and i hope his carreer goes as far south{into the toilet} as the dixie shits....i say send him to france along with jerry lewis....

I found it interesting that Gen. Tommy Franks called him Baghdad Bob just the other day.

I hope he does turn himself in. I think he was the best comic relief during the fighting. I liked the suggestion that someone had a little while ago, that he should replace Ari Fleischer. :-)

Posted by: Allan E at April 30, 2003 01:30 PM

The other day at CentCom
Gen Franks said "Baghdad Bob"
My jaw dropped & I called a friend for
confirmation. She said, "Yep he said it".

Posted by: TX Vet at April 30, 2003 01:57 PM

Hey Alan E. how bout
Ari & Bob...movie
"The Road to Damascus"

or maybe Bob can sign on as a
Roady on the "GWB World Tour"

Posted by: Deuce at April 30, 2003 02:05 PM

I think that as soon as our troops get to Bagdad, we should send some of them by to arrest him. Tell him it might be a month or two because most of our troops are in 'retreat' and we're not sure if we'll EVER make it to Bagdad, with all the fierce fighting put up by the Elite Republican Guard.....

Posted by: Jeff B at April 30, 2003 02:24 PM

I don't think we should forget that al-Sahaf was also under the thumb of the regime, maybe moreso than a typical Iraqi citizen, as he was/is a Shia muslim. As UK Foreign Office minsiter Mike O'Brien pointed out on last weeks Question Time, although he was quite 'comical' if he had said anything other that what he did, he would probably have been made to disappear fairly quickly.

Posted by: damo at April 30, 2003 02:24 PM

When Bush was asked if he knew about him earlier this week, he grinned and said "He's my man!" Word is Bush would pause meetings if al-Sahhaf came on.

And the original report in the Arab site said that he was being watched by our soldiers. Probably body-gaurds as much as to be sure he doesn't skip.

Posted by: John Anderson at April 30, 2003 02:26 PM

Baghdad Bob must be shitting bricks.

After all the lies he's told the Iraqis, and being Saddam's mouthpiece, his life ain't worth a plug nickel in most parts of Iraq.

Why should the US military arrest him? When/if that happens, the US taxpayer has to feed and protect the SOB. Let the rabble have at him. Shoe soles are too good for this piece of slime.

It's one thing to be coerced into telling lies, but he raised it to an art-form. What he needs is an Iraqi 'handler'.

Posted by: Eh-Canadian at April 30, 2003 02:32 PM

Damo,

Utter horse-pucks, my friend. He was a stooge for Saddam who rose up in the regime by ratting out his own brother-in-law who was subsequently executed. Your point of view is a little too close to a Nuremberg defense for my ethical sense. "Poor Baghdad Bob, just following orders or they'd be mean to him." Peopel who rise up to be Minister of anything in a totalitarian regime do not get that high without showing plenty of criminal initiative themselves.

Posted by: Lou at April 30, 2003 02:43 PM

damo,

You're forgetting the way he demonstrated his loyalty to Ba'ath was by rolling over on his brother-in-law (resulting in his execution). Additionally, from CNN's mea culpa it was evident he was in charge of making sure people stayed quiet about the things they wanted quiet.

Innocent puppet he was not.

Posted by: Dave at April 30, 2003 02:45 PM

The military said this is hog wash, they would love to arrest poor ol Bob.

Posted by: JC at April 30, 2003 02:49 PM

How can he surrender to American troops when there are no American troops in Baghdad? Never!

I don't care how complicit he was with the regime. He was f'in funny and he should be spared and used to entertain us!!!

Please folks, let's not get all moralistic know after we just exert our might all over the world at our whim.

Posted by: Baghdad Bob at April 30, 2003 03:04 PM

Hey, let's lighten up here on Bob.
I've got an ex-brother-in-law I'm not fond of.

Posted by: TerryP at April 30, 2003 03:29 PM

Hey, half my friends would turn in their brothers-in-law. five will get you ten fox signs this guy for a reality show.

Posted by: opined at April 30, 2003 03:50 PM

Hey, the guy is funny. He should get a gig as the host of Saturday Night Live. He could intoduce the Dixie Chicks as the musical guest. I vote for the Chicks flanked by dancing Saddam doubles. Or maybe they could get Chirac, Schroeder and Putin to appear and lip sinc one of the Chick's tunes. It only takes money to influence those Weasels.

Posted by: Doug at April 30, 2003 04:22 PM

Hey Doug,
what do you think is the mayor motivation behind the US`Invasion in Iraq?

Posted by: dogui at April 30, 2003 04:33 PM

Dogui -

Too many reasons to name, IMHO.

WMD
Terrorist training
Terrorist dollars
Terrorist harboring
Threats to the US
stabilization to the region
Indroduction of Democracy to the the Arab world
25 year old war against Islamofascism
Liberating 23 million people from a mass murdering tyrant the likes of which haven't been seen since Hitler
Denying France and Germany their oil contracts

Dictators in the Middle East have been attacking the US for over 25 years by proxy. You might not be able to connect the dots in a way that would satisfy the same court that thinks Tommy Franks is a war criminal, but it's as clear as the blank expression on a Frenchman's face - Saddam feeds terrorism. We're cutting off the food supply.

Do you think this was bad, and we should put Saddam back in power? Or, are you like Putin, who believed that sanctions were not needed a month ago, but now believes that they should remain?

Do you think that the Iraqi people are less worthy of freedom and Democracy than the Western world?

Posted by: Cowboy Bob at April 30, 2003 04:58 PM

Dogui,

The mayor motivation was most likely R. Guiliani. (Couldn't resist).

Here's a transcript of what went down at Baghdad Bob's Aunt's house: (from a well-placed listening device)

Auntie Nazarima: Bob, you should surrender today. I am getting tired of doing your laundry. The Americans have Maytag machines for this.

Bob: There is no Maytag. It is a plot. They are a fiction! They will be incinerated.

Auntie Nazarima: Bob, Please walk out there and give up. You stink.

Bob: They are misleading you. I have them surrounded. Within days they with withdraw with no bullets left.

Auntie Nazarima: Actually, I was hoping to get a latte when the Starbuck opens. Could you please move along.

Bob: Latte's are a fictional drink invented by the Zionists, cant you see?

Auntie Nazarima: Whatever.

I keep the television on while I work, usually with the sound off. Each hour has it's designated show. Hour 4 I selected the '700 Club' because I find they have interesting information at times, even if it is tainted toward the religious right, and it is a good way of keeping track of their attitudes.

Interestingly enough during one episode, after I had been reading posts about how 'Baghdad Bob' should go on Saturday Night Live, the guy who runs that television show made a joke about the subject, the other guy on stage with him looked quite suprised and taken aback by the comment.

I didn't post it at the time because I didn't know whether it was worth mentioning. I only post it now because of the comment about Gen. Tommy Franks.

Posted by: tv watcher at April 30, 2003 05:33 PM

Maybe he could go on tour with Bill Clinton.

Posted by: Anonymous at April 30, 2003 06:54 PM

Bagdad Bob.......He could replace Mr. Hainey on Green Acres.

Posted by: Jeff B at April 30, 2003 07:11 PM

Baghdad Bob: I wish to surrender to the American troops.

Marine: You can't.

BB: Why not?

Marine: We're not here.

BB:But I'm talking to you now.

Marine: No you are not.

BB: You mean you won't take me?

Marine: I mean you can't even get yourself arrested. We're not here. Our belly's are raosting in hell. Remember?

Posted by: Mark at April 30, 2003 09:16 PM

I just put a poll up on my blog - vote for whether Baghdad Bob should replace Ari Fleisher

Considering Fleisher is the most boring man on television (see previous poll) I voted yes.

Posted by: Tim Shell at April 30, 2003 09:37 PM

somebody made a good point at "bob" turning in his brother-in-law...maybe he didn't like him. Hell i had one that i would have turned in...a real azz. i say let 'em live

Posted by: mike lawson at April 30, 2003 09:40 PM

Fox will hire him as a correspondent, after all they had convicted liar and felon Ollie North!

Posted by: anon at April 30, 2003 09:41 PM

Thats it Jeff B. He reminds me of Mr Hainey on Green Acres!! ha ha But old Baghdad Bob modernized the head gear a little bit, but he drove the same old truck up to the Palestine Hotel for each daily briefing.....I heard that directly from Christianne Amen Pour Pour of CNN.....you know her as the one who bitched when we shot at the hotel, but shut the hell up when we had to protect the damn place! Now that I hate her ass, she is personis non vaginis

Posted by: Dick D at April 30, 2003 10:09 PM

By God, I speak better English than the villain Fleisher who is no doubt part of a Zionist plot. Allah be praised, he will be surrounded in his stomach, lightly breaded, and pan seared in hell.

Posted by: Badhdad Bob at April 30, 2003 11:14 PM

Most of us are aware of Baghdad Bob's more entertaining qualities, and it's difficult to avoid a twisted affection for the guy, but his personal life has been marked by violence, betrayal, and apologies for a brutal and murderous tribal regime.

As for whether or not the Iraqi people are worthy of freedom and democracy, I have serious doubts that their backward, violent and superstitious culture can support it.

Posted by: General Patton, in France at May 1, 2003 12:18 AM

Self-aggrandizing one,

Why invade Iraq, then? If they're such worthless people, why should we spend so much blood and treasure to liberate them?

Posted by: Skeptical Steve at May 1, 2003 01:54 AM

Well, if Baghdad Bob wants to turn himself in, one condition should be a voluntary interview on the Jay Leno tonight show, otherwize, they should refuse his surrender.

Posted by: Bubba at May 1, 2003 02:41 AM

Steve,

Because they're people.

The same creators of the iraqiinformationminister.com have created ParodyTimes.com a satirical online newspaper features news and event from a world remarkably similar to our own.
Don't miss the articles and pitures of the iraqi minister of information, George W Bush, Tony Blair etc
