UN Discussing Iraq Oil Exports

From CNN Money:

United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan said Tuesday "serious discussions" are under way in the U.N. Security Council to get Iraqi oil exports flowing again.

Annan acknowledged Washington's call for a complete end to sanctions on Iraq but declined to speculate on a possible timetable for the lifting of the U.N. embargo.

Serious discussions? I can imagine them. Probably figuring out how they can make sure they get a piece of the pie after France screwed them all.

Translation: "unless France & Russia come out of this with the same deals they'd made with Saddam, the embargo continues".

Brad, that is not likely the tranlsation. The UN is the UN, France and Russia are not the UN. You are forgetting how much money the UN makes from the Oil for Food Program, its a cash cow.

I think Kofi is more concerned about that, not what France and Russia had in the fryer. Now are they maybe working toward common interests? Likely, but don't confuse the two.

The UN Blood-for-Oil program is way out of hand. UN corruption and Franco-Russian corruption go hand in glove. Perhaps it's a coincidence of interest, but in any case this is the thing that should be protested.

Why, when Saddam was in power, all these folks were in favor of lifting sanctions, supposedly on humanitarian grounds. Now we see it was all greed.

Porphy, agreed. I was just making the distinction that I seriously doubt Kofi Annan acts as an agent of France and Russian interests in particular, without some kind of benefit to his corrupt and useless employer. In otherwords, he thinks about the UN first, and if France and Russia help his cause, as they might often do, then there's plenty of love..
