Labour To Probe Iraq Cash To MP Claim

More, this time from ic Liverpool:

Labour officials are to investigate "extremely serious" allegations that maverick MP George Galloway was paid at least £375,000 a year by Saddam Hussein's Iraqi regime, says party chairman Ian McCartney.

General secretary David Triesman will look into the claims, which Mr Galloway dismissed as "black propaganda" and "intelligence hocus pocus".

Anyone want to take a stab at the over/under on days to resignation?

The term "accidently shot himself in the head while cleaning his handgun" comes to mind. If this were Joseph Liebermen or (god help us) John Mcain i would expect nothing less, cept maybe treason charges.

Only this would not be the equivalent of either Mr. Lieberman or Mr McCain. No not by a long shot. Both of these individuals are known as mavericks and have been called centrists by some. NO, a much more appropro equivalent would be someone like Jim Mc Dermont or Teddy Kennedy. Died in the wool far lefty. Do you still think that shame will bring dispair and regret and trigger a suicide? .... I somehow doubt shame ever visits MP Galloway, just like it rarely finds a place with the American left either.

This would clearly be actionable in US courts if it could be proven.

It wouldn't even have to be treason, which is very hard to prove. Simply Acting as an Agent of a Foreign Power without registering as such. This is a serious crime, otherwise known as spying. Is there a British equivalent?

No Shaulie we in the UK live in the stone age - what's a court? Besides you have way over estimated the British press's ability to tell the truth, only the truth and nothing but the truth. It is a long way from beeing proven that this is true and if it is I expect HM Prosecution will take "a dim view" and you can guarantee some action will be tried. In any case the guy has shot himself on the foot already. Did you see the footage of a woman who had been raped by Sadam's men go to Galloway's house to speak to him? This guys is dirt in Brit politics now. Of course he might publish his life story yet.

Looks like Galloway is still trying to deny it (http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story2&u=/afp/20030422/wl_uk_afp/iraq_britain_galloway_030422144756&e=1)

Wonder if the alleged proof will stand up in a court of law? The next few days or weeks will be interesting.

Follow the money...The documents by themselves probably don't constitute enough evidence but there will undoubtably be a moneytrail. You don't shift around that kind of dough without records. Most likely they will easilly be able to find records from the Iraqi side showing where the money was deposited, wheather that account can be linked to Galloway is the real question.

Hey, speaking of Galloway...
