Arab League: US should not have bases in Iraq
According to AFP: Arab League Secretary General Amr Mussa warned against the United States maintaining a permanent military presence in Iraq and joined Jordan in calling for the speedy withdrawal of US troops.Posted By Martin Devon at April 21, 2003 03:59 PM | TrackBack Stupid reporters trying to make news are creating diplomatic problems... Jackasses, the whole lot of them... Posted by: Original Mark at April 21, 2003 04:18 PMThe US won't win either way: if they stay in Iraq, they will be labeled "imperialists;" should they leave and Iraq collapses into chaos, the US would be accused of not being caring enough. The moral of the story is to ignore outside opinion and do what you think is right. Posted by: Sean Hackbarth at April 21, 2003 04:22 PMMust be a translation problem. The good minister supposedly said: "Dangerous developments are taking place but we cannot back or accept" the presence of permanent military bases in Iraq, Mussa said in response to a question." But that's just crazy talk. He must have said, or at least meant: "Dangerous developments are taking place but we cannot affect in any way" the presence of permanent military bases in Iraq, Mussa said in response to a question." Posted by: T. Hartin at April 21, 2003 04:40 PMThe most dangerous development is the gaul (I'm mean gall) of the NY Times. Posted by: BobbyV at April 21, 2003 05:01 PMGosh, we wouldn't want to do anything that might upset this bunch of well-mannered, upstanding paragons of civilization, would we? We should get the Iraqis on their feet, remove all of our troops from the entire region, ball up that roadmap and throw it in the trash and tell the arabs and the israelis to work it out however they like. Then we can see about peace in the region. Posted by: Beachbum at April 21, 2003 05:05 PMI have bad news for Amr Mussa: whether or not we establish a long-term military presence in Iraq, neither he nor his organization are going to have any say in the matter, for the era in which we had to beg Arab potentates for basing rights is rapidly drawing to a close. We have important work to do. " ..You can't please everyone/ Thing is, they're right. Of course if we do this right we won't NEED bases in the region, The Iraqis won't be militarists anymore, and Iran's theocracy will be collapsing leaving a functional democracy. (Iran is IIRC politically structured like Israel, except withut freedom of religion) Syria is the only remaining potential belligarent(sp?) after this admittedly slightly rosy scenario. We need a military base in the region for force projection purposes, but it must be naval, and Iraq has little in the way of coastline. Posted by: anonq at April 21, 2003 06:27 PMThe issue of bases is a serious one. It is pretty clear we raised a trial ballon yesterday even if we were forced to backtrack Posted by: kelly at April 21, 2003 08:09 PMAll your bases are us! Posted by: FOG at April 21, 2003 09:22 PMwhat business is it of the arab league if the usa has military bases in Iraq? I think that will be the iraqi governments decision, not a bunch of fearfull arab dictators who fear that their asses are next. Face it, America will be in Iraq till about 2005, thats when it is expected that iraq will have it's first democraticly elected government. Posted by: ya right at April 21, 2003 09:29 PMblah blah blah. I love listening to organizations sans power or influence whine. been alot of that lately. Posted by: rumcrook at April 21, 2003 10:22 PMStupid reporters trying to make news are creating diplomatic problems... Yes if it weren't for reporters we would all be happy in our ignorance.
