..or for UK readers, Hereward al-Wake. As the fighting is now confined to desultory mopping-up of fanatics, stories are starting to emerge of events of the last few weeks. From the BBC At the beginning of the war, it was rumoured that the people of the southern Iraqi city Basra had risen up against Saddam Hussein. These claims later proved unfounded.
