CNN's Iraqi Lickspittling

From the Washington Times comes some astonishing revelations about CNN's behaviour in Baghdad during the 90's:

.Mr. Johnson approached, having seen my performance on a TV monitor. "You were a bit flat there, Peter," he said. Again, I was astonished. The president of CNN was telling me I seemed less-than-enthusiastic reading Saddam Hussein's propaganda.
...
In my brief acquaintance with Mr. Jordan at CNN, I formed the impression of a decent man, someone with a conscience. On the day Mr. Jordan published his piece in the New York Times, a panel on Fox News was discussing his astonishing admissions. Brit Hume wondered, "Why would he ever write such a thing?" Another panelist suggested, "Perhaps his conscience is bothering him." Mr. Eason, it should be.
Read the whole article. And one may well wonder why the author (with 30 years in the journalism business) didn't speak up loudly before now. Better late than never, I suppose.
UPDATE : More in a related OP-ED article.

The parallels between the reporters at CNN and the Iraqi citizens are becoming more and more alike. Both afraid of the dictator for fear of reprecussions.

I distrust semantically-loaded words, they're usually a substitute for rational thought. But I'll be darned if I can think of any more accurate word than "Lickspittle". Read the article, and if you can think of something less emotive, please help me out.

The link is incorrect, it is in the Washington Times, not Post, not that it matters greatly.

Posted by: Andrew at April 16, 2003 12:03 AM

Um, it matters. Greatly.

WAP is my local paper. WAT most certainly is not.

The major difference, though, is that CNN could pull out of Baghdad anytime they wanted. They chose to be used as a propaganda tool. It will be difficult to trust them again in similar situations.

On the fourth week of wartime, victory showed to me:

Twelve Saudis funding.
Eleven Russians spying.
Ten Syrians hiding.
Nine Krauts a-selling.
Eight Brits a-spinning.
Seven Baath a-running.
Six Dems a-posing.
Five perfid frogs...
Four allies killing.
Three French Chicks.
Two burnt-out doves.
And C-N-N in a bare tree.

nice one smokinjoe...looks like all that money you spent on pot has paid off....lol but do we sing that to the tune of 12 days of christmas.?

Posted by: aby normal at April 16, 2003 12:30 AM

Aby, the French term is lécheur.

Lickspittle is pejorative term for someone who flatters to excess...

Posted by: General Patton, in France at April 16, 2003 12:33 AM

*a* pejorative term

Posted by: General Patton, in France at April 16, 2003 12:34 AM

thank you general. why didnt they just say an ASSLICKER....BROWNNOSER.?

Posted by: aby normal at April 16, 2003 12:37 AM

I think Alan used lickspittle because he's from Australia.

They speak Southern Hemisphere English there.

Is CNN still running those self praising ads about being 'the network you can trust' ?? Do I notice that their anchors and reporters are looking a little different lately...or is that just me?
I like your words SmokinJoe...but I think better sung to 99 bottles of beer on the wall than the 12 days of Christmas right? ha ha

This was indeed the wrong thing to do, like Geraldo Rivera putting our troops in harms way, only worse.

Why is everyone so surprised at the CNN stuff? Who owns CNN? Ted Turner. Who owns Ted Turner? Jane Fonda.

It's not like she hasn't done this before....

Posted by: Syzygy at April 16, 2003 06:41 AM

Jane and Ted Turner are no longer together... even he was too much for her.
