BBC: Abbas Arrest "Something of a Vindication" for US

Palestine fugitive found in Baghdad

A BBC correspondent in Washington says the US will regard his capture as an important victory in the war on terrorism, as well as something of a vindication of the charge that the regime of Saddam Hussein was connected to terrorist groups.

Yes, this was a nice catch. It will be interesting to see if the US will bring him back to the states or just turn him over to the Italians.

I like how the BBC says that the "US will regard" this as important (as if others will have a different opinion) and also how it might be seen as "something" of a vindication instead of being the outright vindication which it is.

Posted by: PoliticaObscura at April 15, 2003 09:55 PM

XM, in view of how the Italians handled the shipjackers last time around I'm worried about sending him back there.

Posted by: Skibum` at April 15, 2003 09:56 PM

One thing's for sure - we don't need to get our vindication or important victories at the BBC.

Posted by: Skibum at April 15, 2003 09:59 PM

BBC being mealy-mouthed about a significant result for the Coalition ?

What's new ?

I'm only surprised they aren't questioning the veracity of the story. But of course they can no longer take their steer on events from Baghdad Bob.

Bush had to somehow justify this illegal war. Just like how chemical agents were planted by our troops and Shrub pulling the puppet strings of the blatantly right wing radical news media, this is just another act.

Wake up people! Or turn in your voter I.D. cards!

Now, this is my gift to you Americans.

would you not like to take this person, stick big needles in his toe nails, and finger nails, make him cry?

then feed him well, let him heal, then do it again?

ripp off all his finger and toe nails, one by one, put salt on the wound, feed him well, let him heal, then do it again?

Ahh, the Saddam torture chamber, it was my favorite place to go when bush pissed me off.... I'd go take pliers, and cut off a kurds finger, make him eat it because he was hungry.....

I will miss iraq, but now, I am new Information minister for Syria, see? I had my job picked out long before you stupid Americans came......

Hey oakarina,

To quote the dread Pirate Roberts: "Get used to disappointment."

Posted by: Curt at April 15, 2003 10:25 PM

We will follow the established rules that no one else seems to acknowledge........and probably get screwed. I, for one, am sick of taking the "higher ground".
Oakarina...you are an ass.

Tim Blair has a decent suggestion: someone find a wheelchair, and top up the swimming pool.

Not only was this the victory of the day but give it 2 weeks and we'll find chems galore there.

Saddam was FAR worse than even Bush suspected.

As for the "liberal dips" HAD Gore been sworn in we would have been in Iraq even sooner. Read you fools. For 8 years Gore advocated exactly this invasion and for very similar reasons.

Look beyond the tips of your noses.
If you can see that far.

Oh, please, "vindication." Everyone in the entire world already knew that Saddam sponsored terrorism. Some people found it convenient to lie about it, that's all. This is good, not because it vindicates us, but because Abbas can now die at the end of an American rope.

And I think we should buy the rope from Israel.

Yes, clever how we "planted" Abbas, eh ? ;)

Posted by: Dale at April 15, 2003 11:22 PM

Oh, how I hunger and thirst for the leadership of Al Gore. If he only stood amid the levers or power - what great things he would do for those who brought him there! How his enemies would weep and grind their teeth in the outer darkness!

Yes. And after they fry his ass for murdering an old man, he will recieve a proper and final planting here in the states.

I imagine that, though Israel doesn't have the death penalty (hasn't since 1954), they would not mind donating a few people to...ahem....observe the Abbas execution.

And, God. I wish the federal system used hanging, not lethal injection.

Oh _THOSE_ terrorists with Iraqi connections.

Posted by: Mean Dean at April 15, 2003 11:43 PM

No, this is clearly impossible. Hussein is a _secular_ leader remember? Islamists _hate_ Hussein remember? They would never work with him. Clearly you people are mistaken.

Posted by: Mark Buehner at April 15, 2003 11:46 PM

Allen,

You don't get it. Gore and Clinton advocated an invasion as a threat that they didn't mean in order to continue diplomatic solutions.

Once the need to go in actually arose and the ostrich-like behavior of Carter, Reagan, and Clinton/Gore was shown to be the disaster it is, Gore wasn't in favor of going in. He was too worried what the Kyoto crowd would think of him.

Even in 1991, Gore agreed to support the invasion only after he was promised prime speaking time on the Senate floor. Otherwise, he was voting NO and speaking against.

So, when faced with another Hitler, Gore and Clinton were not willing to stop him, just as Carter and Reagan were not willing to do anything serious.

Except on issues in which they were in the pocket of their strongest base (abortion, affirmative action), Gore/Clinton were run by polls, not by principles. Once the polls showed that the US didn't want to go in without UN support (which they did), they would have done NOTHING!

Gore is a lightweight. Saddam would have had him for lunch (and Sandy Berger for a sweet afterward).

In 1985 when Abbas was first caught (Ronald Reagan sent jet fighters to intercept his getaway plane!) he was travelling on an Iraqi diplomatic passport. Somehow that impressed the Italians and was probably part of the reason they released him.

So, we have here a terrorist travelling on Iraq's passport while engaging in terrorism and living in Iraq for eighteen years since. Looks like a connection between terrorism and Saddam to me.

Posted by: Fred Boness at April 16, 2003 03:22 AM

Actually he lived in Palestine for some years, was allowed to do so by Isreali security, after they deemed that he had "renounced violence", and his arrest warrants were dropped by the US.

Looks like a pretty lame "terrorist" to me.

Posted by: Dan at April 16, 2003 06:53 AM

Dan

He initially claimed to be renouncing terrorism. But Israel had Abbas kicked out after he started to preach terrorist violence again.

Leopards don't change their spots.
