Update: Negotiations For Peaceful Handover of Tikrit? CNN Under Fire (Literally!)

Updating this post and this one.

They're following a local teacher who reports that fedayeen have left the city. He also reports a rumor that coalition forces are negotiating with tribal leaders for a peaceful handover of Tikrit. The school teacher is leading them into Tikrit now and they've decided it's safe enough to follow.

Ongoing coverage of the trip in the extended entry.

Update: They were wrong about Tikrit being safe. See the extended entry for more.

They just passed a checkpoint with men in uniform who didn't want to be filmed but otherwise allowed them to pass. They're in Tikrit proper now. Some airstrike damage but no signs of fighting.

The driver who was leading them into town stopped to talk to them. They stopped and the feed went dead.

The feed is back and it's showing guys in civilian clothing with guns. The crew has put down the camera, reportedly because the guys with guns don't want to be filmed.

Brent Sadler is back and they're moving again. The guys who stopped them said they needed permission from the local Baath party governor to get permission to film. They're leaving town now, instead.

They came under fire at the checkpoint on the way out of town and shot their way through. CNN apparently has a guard armed with a machine gun!

Now they're being chased by presumed hostile who is signalling to them. Not presumed any longer, they're under fire again, from pistols this time. It looks like they made it but one of the vehicles took some damage.

One truck lost its back windows and they reported that one of the drivers has "a head wound." The feed jumped at that point, so no idea how bad it is.

The convoy is back together and they're heading north away from Tikrit at a high rate of speed. They aren't planning to stop.

Signal just went dead again.

Posted by: General Patton, in France at April 13, 2003 02:41 AM

He just got turned around... and then shot at.

The armed driver blew through the checkpoint and exchanged fire with Iraqis.

They're still following them....

Posted by: RyMaN600 at April 13, 2003 02:41 AM

For those with no TV, the CNN team took fire, and their guard fired back.

Now they are taking more fire, and they outside of the city. Pistol Fire.

Posted by: CERDIP at April 13, 2003 02:42 AM

Wow. Now they seem to be in a car to car gunfight.

But by machine gun, he means 'assault rifle' or perhaps sub-machine gun.

Posted by: Jeremy at April 13, 2003 02:42 AM

They are bugging out, big style.

Posted by: CERDIP at April 13, 2003 02:43 AM

Their vehicle has taken some shots. Oh boy, if they are stranded...

Posted by: CERDIP at April 13, 2003 02:43 AM

Posted by: General Patton, in France at April 13, 2003 02:45 AM

Just caught up from the other posts. Is this really not just a stunt to make up for the flack CNN is getting on the Eason Jordan confession?

Posted by: candy at April 13, 2003 02:45 AM

"For those with no TV, the CNN team took fire, and their guard fired back."

Translation: The CNN team is dumber than shit, suffering delusions of grandeur and just about got killed on live television by driving into a hostile enemy city.

Posted by: Joe Maller at April 13, 2003 02:46 AM

Attention, CENTCOM. We need an airstrike on highway leading out of Tikrit going to Mosul.

Posted by: Andrew Hagen at April 13, 2003 02:46 AM

They are still being tailed... I must say, they're pretty calm for people stranded in the middle of nowhere being shot at =)

Posted by: Anenga at April 13, 2003 02:46 AM

nope, it isn't.

Posted by: CERDIP at April 13, 2003 02:46 AM

I don't think their insurance co. will pick up the tab for bullet holes acquired.. They better hope they haven't incurred engine/driveline damage or they could be in for a world of hurt..

Posted by: descartes at April 13, 2003 02:46 AM

Brent's book deal has now been confirmed. I guarantee no one is enjoying this right now more than his agent.

I don't get CNN, please keep live blogging!

Posted by: candy at April 13, 2003 02:48 AM

THeir trailing guard vehicle has had the windows shot out.

Sadler has been reporting from war zones for over 20 years. He's seen this stuff up close more than most military people have.

One of their drivers has a head wound.

Posted by: CERDIP at April 13, 2003 02:48 AM

One person has a head wound.

Posted by: CERDIP at April 13, 2003 02:50 AM

Signal is not back, it's showing stuff from "Moments ago"

Posted by: Anenga at April 13, 2003 02:50 AM

wondering about composition of 7 vehicle convoy.

one is brent's. one is satellite truck. some armed guards are obviously present. how many of the convoy are effectively private (cnn) military?

Posted by: DontTread at April 13, 2003 02:50 AM

On CoastToCoast we're all trying to visualize artillery being called in in support of Sadler.

30% chance they made it without major gunshot wounds.

There is a new thread CNN Shoots Their Way out of Tikrit....

Posted by: jerry at April 13, 2003 02:57 AM

Joe, no ? are you referring to the slow frame update that occurs when the picture changes rapidly (due to CODEC lag) ?

Posted by: CERDIP at April 13, 2003 02:57 AM

Check this out!

CNN Was Target
In a bizarre plot that was designed to punish CNN for establishing a news bureau in a Kurdish- held part of northern Iraq before the war began, Iraqi agents had planned to blow up CNN offices there, the cable network reported. A number of staffers, including veteran correspondent Brent Sadler, also were apparently targeted.

Posted by: CERDIP at April 13, 2003 02:58 AM

Posted by: AvidWatcher at April 13, 2003 02:58 AM

Commercial break,...

Posted by: Dan at April 13, 2003 02:59 AM

CNN is going to commercial. I'm wondering about the backstory of this convoy. How do you get security guys in Iraq at this time of year?

Sadler's guy sounded Australian. Do the networks hire mercs? Do the mercs have to get clearance from coalition forces? How does this all work?

Posted by: DontTread at April 13, 2003 02:59 AM

Wasn't Sadler almost taken out by that friendly fire that killed the Kurds and Special Forces a few days ago?

If so, he's having an ... adventuresome week.

Posted by: Steve at April 13, 2003 03:00 AM

You'd think with all the journalists who've died in the last three weeks, Brent Sadler would have more sense. There are no rules in this war.

Posted by: Joanne Jacobs at April 13, 2003 03:00 AM

At the point of the headwound announcement, did anyone else notice CNN jumped forward a few seconds in time?

Apparently they run the 'live' feed on a 5 second delay in order to cut out nasty stuff.

Posted by: Phil B at April 13, 2003 03:01 AM

not that I am a conspiracy theorist or anything, but that Newsday article was published the day after the Eason Jordan flack, now this...

Posted by: candy at April 13, 2003 03:01 AM

Great, now it's CNN International. I hate this guy.

Posted by: Anenga at April 13, 2003 03:01 AM

Great, now it's CNN International. I hate this guy.

Posted by: Anenga at April 13, 2003 03:01 AM

Don't know about coalition rules for journo security, but on the road in third world countries, $$$ easily buy armed ecurity.

Posted by: General Patton, in France at April 13, 2003 03:01 AM
"are you referring to the slow frame update that occurs when the picture changes rapidly (due to CODEC lag) ?"

No, I thought I saw a quick crossfade forward in time. I might be mistaken, but it seemed like there was a man on the side of the road next to a truck, then the motion jumped past there and they mentioned the head wound. I know there is some amount of live-buffering so the networks can cut away if something horrible happens, I'm wondering if someone at CNN hit the bump button.

No Tivo here, so I can't go back and check. CNN's replays likely won't show it since they've got the un-altered tape.

On preview, I think they just played the missing seconds...

Posted by: Joe Maller at April 13, 2003 03:02 AM

Phil B - I doubt that. The conversations between the studio and the crew are showing the normal ~2.5 second satellite delay.

Posted by: CERDIP at April 13, 2003 03:03 AM

How do you get security guys in Iraq at this time of year?

All the journalists seem to have security guys, even the embeddeds.

For some reason a lot of them seem to be Australian ex Special Forces.

No idea why!

Posted by: Phil B at April 13, 2003 03:05 AM

"Don't know about coalition rules for journo security, but on the road in third world countries, $$$ easily buy armed ecurity."

Probably not if you just shot your way past a checkpoint.

I hope CNN brought enough firepower along. AK-47s, plenty of ammo, pistols, etc.

Posted by: Andrew Hagen at April 13, 2003 03:05 AM

CERDIP, audio and video may be unsynced.

Posted by: Joe Maller at April 13, 2003 03:05 AM

I see what you mean Joe, but there is no point doing that, with the low resolution of the video phone feed.

Posted by: CERDIP at April 13, 2003 03:07 AM

Breezing past armed checkpoints is not recommended without armour.

Posted by: General Patton, in France at April 13, 2003 03:07 AM

I won't be live blogging any more on this post. If I'm still awake when (if) the feed comes back I'll create a new post and live-blog it there.

-- Erik

Posted by: Erik at April 13, 2003 03:07 AM

Phil B - I doubt that. The conversations between the studio and the crew are showing the normal ~2.5 second satellite delay.

They delay the whole thing, ie the entire feed - anchor and all.

Posted by: Phil B at April 13, 2003 03:09 AM

Patton - I think the checkpoint was the one they had already passed on the way in, on the opposite side of the carriageway. I doubt they would have breezed pst it if it was set up on the side they were leaving on.

Posted by: CERDIP at April 13, 2003 03:09 AM

Phil - yes, I would expect the whole thing to be delayed, but I got the impression that you meant the video cam feed itself was delayed...

Posted by: CERDIP at April 13, 2003 03:10 AM

Sounds like they had a brutal misunderstanding... or a brush with bandits.
