Update: Negotiations For Peaceful Handover of Tikrit? CNN Under Fire (Literally!)
Updating this post and this one.
They just passed a checkpoint with men in uniform who didn't want to be filmed but otherwise allowed them to pass. They're in Tikrit proper now. Some airstrike damage but no signs of fighting.
This is cool, like a progressive dinner. Okay, where we going for dessert? Posted by: jerry at April 13, 2003 02:34 AMROFL! Someone driving on the side of him is "hostile". Uhh... Posted by: Anenga at April 13, 2003 02:41 AMnow its a car chase with bandits ! attacked? what did i miss? Posted by: Jeannie at April 13, 2003 02:41 AMfiring at them? Posted by: General Patton, in France at April 13, 2003 02:41 AMHe just got turned around... and then shot at. The armed driver blew through the checkpoint and exchanged fire with Iraqis. They're still following them.... Posted by: RyMaN600 at April 13, 2003 02:41 AMFor those with no TV, the CNN team took fire, and their guard fired back. Now they are taking more fire, and they outside of the city. Pistol Fire. Posted by: CERDIP at April 13, 2003 02:42 AMWow. Now they seem to be in a car to car gunfight. But by machine gun, he means 'assault rifle' or perhaps sub-machine gun. Posted by: Jeremy at April 13, 2003 02:42 AMThey are bugging out, big style. Their vehicle has taken some shots. Oh boy, if they are stranded... Posted by: Anenga at April 13, 2003 02:43 AMwimps (kidding) Posted by: General Patton, in France at April 13, 2003 02:43 AMStopped to pick up the rest of the team that were waiting on the outskirts. Posted by: CERDIP at April 13, 2003 02:43 AMNow they are being tailed again. Send in the A-10s !!! Burn! Burn! Burn! Burn! Burn! Burn! Burn! Run like hell! Posted by: Andrew Hagen at April 13, 2003 02:44 AMcame damn close to the bleeding edge of journalism Posted by: DontTread at April 13, 2003 02:44 AMthey want their cameras, videophones, laptops... Posted by: General Patton, in France at April 13, 2003 02:45 AMJust caught up from the other posts. Is this really not just a stunt to make up for the flack CNN is getting on the Eason Jordan confession? Posted by: candy at April 13, 2003 02:45 AM"For those with no TV, the CNN team took fire, and their guard fired back." Translation: The CNN team is dumber than shit, suffering delusions of grandeur and just about got killed on live television by driving into a hostile enemy city. Posted by: Joe Maller at April 13, 2003 02:46 AMAttention, CENTCOM. We need an airstrike on highway leading out of Tikrit going to Mosul. Posted by: Andrew Hagen at April 13, 2003 02:46 AMThey are still being tailed... I must say, they're pretty calm for people stranded in the middle of nowhere being shot at =) Posted by: Anenga at April 13, 2003 02:46 AMnope, it isn't. I don't think their insurance co. will pick up the tab for bullet holes acquired.. They better hope they haven't incurred engine/driveline damage or they could be in for a world of hurt.. Brent's book deal has now been confirmed. I guarantee no one is enjoying this right now more than his agent. Posted by: silvertrain22 at April 13, 2003 02:47 AMthey probably think these guys are carrying cash, too... Posted by: General Patton, in France at April 13, 2003 02:47 AMCmon', I want Brent to say "Shut up pretty boy!!" Posted by: Anenga at April 13, 2003 02:47 AMThis is evolution in action! Whose genes will survive to breed? Good driving genes or good shooting genes? Posted by: jerry at April 13, 2003 02:47 AMI don't get CNN, please keep live blogging! Posted by: candy at April 13, 2003 02:48 AMTHeir trailing guard vehicle has had the windows shot out. Sadler has been reporting from war zones for over 20 years. He's seen this stuff up close more than most military people have.
One person has a head wound. Posted by: AvidWatcher at April 13, 2003 02:48 AMis there an echo in here? ;) Posted by: Jeannie at April 13, 2003 02:48 AMHeadline tomorrow: (I hope): CNN crew blasts way out of Saddam's last stronghold. 70 mph? That isn't fast enough. Fucking floor it! Posted by: Andrew Hagen at April 13, 2003 02:48 AMlsot signal again. Moving out at 70 mph in a 7 vehicle convoy. Signal back. Lots of cars. Posted by: Anenga at April 13, 2003 02:50 AMDamn! I told you to get the 6 cylinder, not the 4! Posted by: AvidWatcher at April 13, 2003 02:50 AMit's 50-50 Posted by: General Patton, in France at April 13, 2003 02:50 AMNever take a teacher's advice. Posted by: silvertrain22 at April 13, 2003 02:50 AMI wonder was that 'school teacher' Fayez really who he said he was ? If so, then what happened to him ? Signal is not back, it's showing stuff from "Moments ago" Posted by: Anenga at April 13, 2003 02:50 AMwondering about composition of 7 vehicle convoy. one is brent's. one is satellite truck. some armed guards are obviously present. how many of the convoy are effectively private (cnn) military? Posted by: DontTread at April 13, 2003 02:50 AMOn CoastToCoast we're all trying to visualize artillery being called in in support of Sadler. Posted by: jerry at April 13, 2003 02:51 AMFayez the singer. Posted by: General Patton, in France at April 13, 2003 02:51 AMwhat's coasttocoast jerry? Posted by: Jeannie at April 13, 2003 02:51 AMFeed is cut. Not a good sign. Turn on the jets, men. Posted by: Andrew Hagen at April 13, 2003 02:51 AMreplaying the attack. One of the vehicles in the convoy is a security vehicle. Posted by: CERDIP at April 13, 2003 02:52 AMI hope Sadler (cool reporting under fire) et co are OK. Anderson looks like he's about to cry and/or is confused. Posted by: rose at April 13, 2003 02:52 AM30-70 Posted by: General Patton, in France at April 13, 2003 02:52 AMFun/Silly/Bogus radio show devoted to paranormal and conspiracy theories. Great when driving across country late at night. Posted by: jerry at April 13, 2003 02:53 AMAnderson always looks like that :) Posted by: Anenga at April 13, 2003 02:53 AMThe Colonel on CNN says that Sadler needs an award of some kind for understatement. Coast To Coast (used to be the Art Bell show.) Posted by: jerry at April 13, 2003 02:53 AMah...sounds like it could be fun. :0 Posted by: Jeannie at April 13, 2003 02:53 AMya gotta admit this is drama. (still no live signal, for the tv deprived). Posted by: DontTread at April 13, 2003 02:54 AMConfirmed: Pentagon Officals are watching! Posted by: Anenga at April 13, 2003 02:54 AM30-70 what, Patton ? 30% chance they made it without major gunshot wounds. Posted by: General Patton, in France at April 13, 2003 02:55 AMAt the point of the headwound announcement, did anyone else notice CNN jumped forward a few seconds in time? Posted by: Joe Maller at April 13, 2003 02:55 AMThanks for the updates all, please keep them coming. Posted by: yank at April 13, 2003 02:55 AMStill more filler talk while it looks like they lost contact. Posted by: Dan at April 13, 2003 02:56 AMyes, pls keep live blog if poss. Posted by: General Patton, in France at April 13, 2003 02:56 AMThere is a new thread CNN Shoots Their Way out of Tikrit.... Posted by: jerry at April 13, 2003 02:57 AMJoe, no ? are you referring to the slow frame update that occurs when the picture changes rapidly (due to CODEC lag) ? Check this out! CNN Was Target Lots of jibber jabber right now. No signal yet. Does this remind anyone else of bar hopping? ;) Posted by: AvidWatcher at April 13, 2003 02:58 AMCommercial break,... Posted by: Dan at April 13, 2003 02:59 AMCNN is going to commercial. I'm wondering about the backstory of this convoy. How do you get security guys in Iraq at this time of year? Sadler's guy sounded Australian. Do the networks hire mercs? Do the mercs have to get clearance from coalition forces? How does this all work? Posted by: DontTread at April 13, 2003 02:59 AMWasn't Sadler almost taken out by that friendly fire that killed the Kurds and Special Forces a few days ago? If so, he's having an ... adventuresome week. Posted by: Steve at April 13, 2003 03:00 AMYou'd think with all the journalists who've died in the last three weeks, Brent Sadler would have more sense. There are no rules in this war. Posted by: Joanne Jacobs at April 13, 2003 03:00 AMAt the point of the headwound announcement, did anyone else notice CNN jumped forward a few seconds in time? Apparently they run the 'live' feed on a 5 second delay in order to cut out nasty stuff. Posted by: Phil B at April 13, 2003 03:01 AMnot that I am a conspiracy theorist or anything, but that Newsday article was published the day after the Eason Jordan flack, now this... Posted by: candy at April 13, 2003 03:01 AMGreat, now it's CNN International. I hate this guy. Posted by: Anenga at April 13, 2003 03:01 AMGreat, now it's CNN International. I hate this guy. Posted by: Anenga at April 13, 2003 03:01 AMDon't know about coalition rules for journo security, but on the road in third world countries, $$$ easily buy armed ecurity. Posted by: General Patton, in France at April 13, 2003 03:01 AM"are you referring to the slow frame update that occurs when the picture changes rapidly (due to CODEC lag) ?" No, I thought I saw a quick crossfade forward in time. I might be mistaken, but it seemed like there was a man on the side of the road next to a truck, then the motion jumped past there and they mentioned the head wound. I know there is some amount of live-buffering so the networks can cut away if something horrible happens, I'm wondering if someone at CNN hit the bump button. No Tivo here, so I can't go back and check. CNN's replays likely won't show it since they've got the un-altered tape. On preview, I think they just played the missing seconds... Posted by: Joe Maller at April 13, 2003 03:02 AMPhil B - I doubt that. The conversations between the studio and the crew are showing the normal ~2.5 second satellite delay. Posted by: CERDIP at April 13, 2003 03:03 AMHow do you get security guys in Iraq at this time of year? All the journalists seem to have security guys, even the embeddeds. For some reason a lot of them seem to be Australian ex Special Forces. No idea why! Posted by: Phil B at April 13, 2003 03:05 AM"Don't know about coalition rules for journo security, but on the road in third world countries, $$$ easily buy armed ecurity." Probably not if you just shot your way past a checkpoint. I hope CNN brought enough firepower along. AK-47s, plenty of ammo, pistols, etc. Posted by: Andrew Hagen at April 13, 2003 03:05 AMCERDIP, audio and video may be unsynced. Posted by: Joe Maller at April 13, 2003 03:05 AMI see what you mean Joe, but there is no point doing that, with the low resolution of the video phone feed. Breezing past armed checkpoints is not recommended without armour. Posted by: General Patton, in France at April 13, 2003 03:07 AMI won't be live blogging any more on this post. If I'm still awake when (if) the feed comes back I'll create a new post and live-blog it there. -- Erik Posted by: Erik at April 13, 2003 03:07 AMPhil B - I doubt that. The conversations between the studio and the crew are showing the normal ~2.5 second satellite delay. They delay the whole thing, ie the entire feed - anchor and all. Posted by: Phil B at April 13, 2003 03:09 AMPatton - I think the checkpoint was the one they had already passed on the way in, on the opposite side of the carriageway. I doubt they would have breezed pst it if it was set up on the side they were leaving on. Phil - yes, I would expect the whole thing to be delayed, but I got the impression that you meant the video cam feed itself was delayed... Sounds like they had a brutal misunderstanding... or a brush with bandits. Posted by: General Patton, in France at April 13, 2003 03:14 AMPost a comment
