First relief supplies flown into Baghdad

[Abilene Reporter]

The first three C-130 humanitarian airlifts landed in Baghdad Saturday, bringing medical supplies into an area that's gravely hurting from lack of electricity and water.

The 24,000 pounds of aid were sent by the government of Kuwait, and more was expected Saturday night and in the coming days. The supplies will be sent to different hospitals and pockets of need throughout the city, dispersed by U.S. military civil affairs units who are now arriving at the airport.

"We are still in combat ops, but we are doing humanitarian assistance simultaneously," said Lt. Col. Gregory Julian, spokesman for the Coalition Forces Land Component Command now based at the airport. "The world opinion on this campaign is as important as the combat operations."

We've already cleared enough runways to do this? Great!
