Anti-War Leaders Fear US Fast Food Threat to Iraq

From CNS News:

Many Iraqi citizens have taken to the streets in recent days to celebrate their freedom from dictator Saddam Hussein. But that joy could turn to sorrow, anti-war protesters warn, when the Iraqis begin to see their country adopt western cultural values.

Stephanie Schaudel, co-coordinator for Voices in the Wilderness, an anti-war group in Chicago, said the "richness of culture" in Iraq is going to be subjected to Americanization by U.S. corporations during the post-war rebuilding of the war-torn nation. The result, she indicated, would be difficult for Iraqis to swallow.

"Some people would think that seeing a KFC (formerly Kentucky Fried Chicken) on a street corner is a sign of progress, I certainly don't," Schaudel said.

This was truly over-the-top. Hysterical and pathetic at the same time.

hey stepahnie.............SHUT THE FU## UP....theres already to many people opening there mouths on iraq....that aint got shit to do with it....

Posted by: aby normal at April 12, 2003 01:43 PM

I see her point. Certainly near starvation, constant threat of death and horrible repression is preferable any day to a Happy Meal, or (shudder) a KFC two-piece dinner with biscuit. Better two lentils and a pure ethnic culture than a full belly following the free-will choice to eat a meal at an American fast food restaurant. Freedom is the bane of the purists, isn't it?

Posted by: susanna at April 12, 2003 01:45 PM

No. But, seeing the KFC on the corner and being able to choose not to actually buy anything there might be a sign of progress.

Posted by: jackal at April 12, 2003 01:47 PM

This is hilarious, but there's something very alarming about it.

This person is so fanatical, she would rather people in Iraq not have jobs, in order to enforce her "pure" views of the world.

The interesting thing is, she lives in a 1st world country, but doesn't want to give people of a 3rd world country to enjoy the choices and opportunities in her own country.

These people just make me sick.

Help, save us from the tyranny of the Colonel's seven special herbs and spices!! Oh for the days when Saddam's men would beat the soles of our feet, for now we are subjected to crisp poultry at reasonable prices! Our children are free from prison and torture, but at the cost of freely available family meals containing chicken, biscuits, and sides at one low price!

Can no one spare us from this horror?

Posted by: Baghdad Bubba at April 12, 2003 01:48 PM

Better dead than Red (as in Ronald McDonald) I guess. Stephanie, darling, which part of "US *wankers* go home" didn't you understand?

Posted by: JB at April 12, 2003 01:48 PM

Nice to see that my post crossed Susanna's post in the ether and espoused the same basic ideas. Why it cant it be this obvious to the (sigh) voice of the wilderness.

Posted by: jackal at April 12, 2003 01:49 PM

The point should be reinforced that the KFC on the corner is an indicator. Not an indicator of decadence, but an indicator of stability. The presence of a KFC indicates a secure transportation system, the presence of disposable income, a complex work force and a relatively non-violent urban environment. The people objecting to a KFC need to reflect and see if they oppose the situations that bring the KFC on the corner about.

Vox Clamantis in Deserto = Voices clamoring for dessert? What makes this self-dramatizing putz think anyone gives a rodent's glute what she thinks?

Posted by: Dan Collins at April 12, 2003 01:53 PM

Democracy! Whisky! Sexy!

Posted by: Lou at April 12, 2003 01:53 PM

Ridiculous.

Looks like the anti-war protesters need to print up new signs:

"Free Iraq from KFC!"
"No Taco Bell!"
"Ronald McDonald is Hitler!"
"Colonel Sanders is a war criminal!"
"Big Macs are the true WMDs!"

Add yours here. The more ridiculous these people look, the better, IMO.

Posted by: Pablo at April 12, 2003 01:55 PM

Honestly, is this a joke?

Posted by: dirk at April 12, 2003 02:01 PM

Hey, good point you lefty pin-head.

EVERYBODY knows that the real danger in the world today are the RESTAURANTS OF MASS DISTRUCTION!

STFU!!

"Some people would think that seeing a KFC (formerly Kentucky Fried Chicken) on a street corner is a sign of progress, I certainly don't," Schaudel said.

WELL...I've just been up nights worrying that Stephanie Schaudel might not consider this progress! I'm so crushed.

I'll just nip off and shoot myself now...

No blood for grease!

Posted by: Clyde at April 12, 2003 02:19 PM

It's true we have to buy KFC but, by getting take out, we don't actually have to eat it. I just dread the day they start requiring stool samples to make sure we getting our daily quota of the CIA formulated Secret Herbs and Spices. Save us, Stephanie, save us!!!

Posted by: Laurence at April 12, 2003 02:20 PM

Ohh, I get it: they didn't say "shock and awe," they said "chicken all"!

Posted by: Clyde at April 12, 2003 02:22 PM

This person fails to realise it works both ways. One of Meryl's recent posts points out that, without her realising it until this week, her favorite restaurant is Kurdish.

But then the greens don't want Africans to use fertilizers other than their own excrement, India to raise rice that is resistant to rotting from the very water it needs to survive, Egpyt to raise cotton as useful (and thus saleable) as other countries, Peru to investigate the Incan method of irrigation which seems to have been able to support about three times the current level of agriculture...

I could go on, but we are the choir so why bother?

Posted by: John Anderson at April 12, 2003 02:25 PM

Tim Horton's is the real sign of progress!

Having hortons (Germany meaning) would also be progess..

Hortons in German means Whore House, I had a good laugh in Germany over that... No one knew Tim :)

People like Ms Schaudel are nothing more than arrogant, patronizing blowhards. To them, countries like Iraq are nothing more than quaint little museum exhibits, dioramas to keep on a shelf and gaze longingly at when it the horrors of the 21st century are just too much to bear.

Most of the world long ago realized that they're not actually debating anything, just ranting about how stupid and blind everyone else is. Countries in a state of flux are their last chance.

But, of course, it's all for the Iraqi's own good. Surely those backward brown people can't be expected to cope with important choices like planning their own meals.

Posted by: Bryan at April 12, 2003 02:43 PM

Stephanie is right. Iraq needs something new. Maybe a Kentucky Fried Baby Harp Seal or something.

Posted by: BWCASteve at April 12, 2003 03:00 PM

i wish they would bring back the twister.. that was good.. they always dont put enough white sauce on them though

Posted by: gijoe at April 12, 2003 03:04 PM

A 7-11 on the street corner means progress, not a KFC! Damn, you'd think this woman would at least get her facts straight.

Posted by: telzey at April 12, 2003 03:06 PM

I posted my thoughts on this moronic statement. Those who actually paid attention to who was behind the anti-war stuff should not be surprised in the least.

Do they honestly think this kind of thing would make them look good?

Posted by: Andrew Ian Castel-Dodge at April 12, 2003 03:38 PM

Remember all the frozen chicken they found at Udays mansion that the GI's enjoyed so much, well Uday has a chain of chicken places! I guess she is too late, KFC Is already there!!!!!!!!1

Posted by: Nurse Nancy at April 12, 2003 03:50 PM

This woman makes me sick. Now that she can't complain any more about the slaughter of innocents (never our goal anyway), she moves onto the next item on her list: fast-food franchises. Isn't there something more important she could worry about?

What a bleedin' idiot.

Posted by: me at April 12, 2003 04:12 PM

Plenty of calories at a low price. Pure fucking evil.

Posted by: rawsnacks at April 12, 2003 04:24 PM

Gotta say, here in downtown Berkeley, all on their own, a Burger King and a KFC went out of business. The Burger King was replaced by an Indian Fast Food Restaurant, and the KFC hasn't been replaced yet, but it just went out a week ago.

The Indian place is great. Good chaat, good buffet.

If KFC is replaced by an Iraqi restaurant that would be megacool.

Posted by: jerry at April 12, 2003 04:34 PM

Holy crap.
Hey Pelosi, there's your constituency...go tend to her.

Posted by: d smith at April 12, 2003 04:42 PM

"Colonel Sanders is a war criminal!"

sadly, pablo, PETA has already said this in one of their campaigns earlier this year.

you can't even parody these people. they actually take these statements seriously!

Posted by: .e. at April 12, 2003 05:49 PM

Iraq does not need American fast food. They already have falafel, the most successfull export product of the arabic countries after oil. In Europe far more successfull than KFC, I think. I eat in an Iraqi food bar regularly, and have never set foot in a KFC. KFC is for American tourists, and is only found in inner cities and at airports.

Looters have smashed all Babylonian statues in the museum in Baghdad. Does that mean that they don't care about their rich culture or that they want to avoid future tourism?

Posted by: dajak at April 12, 2003 06:07 PM

Some day, the citizens of Baghdad will ride in taxis driven by New Yorkers.

Posted by: Dan Hartung at April 12, 2003 06:19 PM

Insofar as I am employed by KFC's parent corporation, it is incumbent upon me to point out to Bubba that the venerable and inscrutable Colonel (bonus points to anyone who recognizes that reference) did not use "seven special herbs and spices" but, rather, eleven herbs and spices.

That is all.

Posted by: Dodd at April 12, 2003 09:28 PM

dajak,
Of course... none of us need any fast food - most of it is unhealthy and overpriced. But the great thing about America is that we get to choose and that's part of what our culture wants to export to the world. So don't sweat it if KFC, Taco Bell, Pizza Hut, or any other restaurant shows up anywhere in the world - if people want it, they'll eat it, and if they don't, they won't.

Posted by: Thomas at April 12, 2003 09:58 PM

tock, tock....
Earth to fellow american citizens...
you simply seem to forget that those franchise-fucks have been built in IRAQ!
Remember?
yes the Iraq, the one with the war going on since one month
