BREAKING NEWS: Underground prison found

FoxNews reporting that British troops have found what appears to be an underground prison outside Basra. Apparently, they can hear voices inside, but have not yet been able to locate an entrance.

UPDATE: FoxNews is saying that this information is coming from Al Jazeera, but has not yet been confirmed. Al Jazeera is also reporting that British troops have begun breaking down walls to get into the structure.

Wasn't the earlier post about a supposed prison in Baghdad? This story is about one outside of Basra.

This is sounding like a stock Urban Legend has mutated and is circulating out on the field of battle.

When FNC reported it, who did they attribute the story to?

Posted by: Mac at April 11, 2003 11:16 PM

It was attributed to Al Jazeera, which, as Shep Smith actually said, "ain't no confirmation".

Yes... The Baghdad story was sad. I just hope this is not the same thing again in Basra.
It tells you a lot about the desperation of the people with missing family members.
It really jerks my heart strings.

They must be real hungry after 22 days....

Posted by: James at April 11, 2003 11:23 PM

OK Carl! I'll look at the 3:30 post! ;-)

Posted by: Dan at April 11, 2003 11:23 PM

I hope this is a mistake; and really there's just the one in Baghdad. That's horrifying enough. I thought I heard or read somewhere that later on in the day, the US came in with tanks, etc., to help dig out the Baghdad prison. Awful, just awful.

This older article mentions underground prison cells in Basra.

Posted by: Lonewacko at April 11, 2003 11:58 PM

Maybe this is old news. Not the first underground prison found in Basra:

"During an uprising in Basra after the 1991 gulf war, they said, rebelling locals discovered a prison beneath a shoe company filled with prisoners, some of whom had been there for more than 10 years. British officers in the city said today that they had checked many tips about hidden prisons and had found underground cells but no prisoners"

Very weird that all these prisons are found empty. The RG disappeared. The Ba'ath Party vanished. New conspiracy theory needed: Mohammed Saeed al-Sahaf is an alien.

Oh my gosh, I just read the WaPo article mentioned in the above posting
about Tikrit being undefended (http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A10133-2003Apr11.html), and down towards the end, it does confirm that the Brits are at an underground prison south of Al Amarah.

I believe it totally. I grew up in Panama and Manuel Noriega had at least two of them. They were underground dungeons with secret hidden doors. It was awful stuff.

Hey I'm from Panama too, left towards the end of the Noriega mess because my mother was afraid it was getting out of control.

I never heard of these in Panama, do you know where they had them?

I recall reading many years ago that one such prison was was found far too late in (I think) Hungary. The jailers had fled, and the prisoners died of hunger and thirst.

Probably an urban myth. The Warsaw Pact countries didn't collapse outright, they just changed their system of government, and civil servants such as jailers would stick around for a paycheck from the new master. You often find that the locals know exactly where the facilities are, anyway.

ElCapitan: Hey former neighbor! Are you Panamanian or Zonion or ...?

I know one of the dungeons was under Modelo. It was separate from Modelo in usage, however. The door was behind the captain's desk and you had to stoop over to get into it. In other words, the door was not normal sized. Then you went down steps and that was that.... you were seen no more.

The other one was out near Panama Viejo, you know the base/barracks out there? I cannot remember the name. It's where they found all those mass graves a year or so ago and the body of a priest. I don't know where the entrance was, just that it was under the barracks.

Have you been to the yacht club that Noriega was building at Amador? In 19909 I went there with a friend, we cut the barbed wire and went in to see. It was deserted of course and we found bullet holes in the walls. We found two bunker dungeon prisons there, out in the open, right next to the yacht club. One was surface and one went underground, but I did not have a flashlight. No one was there anymore, of course.

Can't find any new details... can you? What I don't understand is how they are hearing these voices. They can't hear through earth, right, so it has to be within a building, hearing sounds up through the pipes or air vents? I'm confused. We need to find them, no matter who they are, but especially in light of the fact that we have missing POWs and it could even be them.

AW: Zonion? Explain for us silly Americans?:-)

I assume you mean someone from the Canal Zone?

(email, please!)

Penta,

Sorry! Yes, you got it right, I meant someone from the Canal Zone!
