From the Middle East Media Research Institute (MEMRI) news ticker:

RUSSIA DENIES THAT SADDAM FOUND ASYLUM IN ITS EMBASSY IN BAGHDAD. (AL-GUMHURIYA, EGYPT 4/10/03)

BEIRUT DAILY AL-MUSTAQBAL STATED THAT MOST ARAB STATES WILL REFUSE TO RECOGNIZE A NEW IRAQI GOVERNMENT IF IT IS ESTABLISHED UNDER AMERICAN AUSPICES AND ITS MEMBERSHIP IN THE ARAB LEAGUE MAY BE SUSPENDED....

Sorry for all-caps. Remember, this is the news ticker, separate from the link to detailed translations of full stories at MEMRI posted below at 10:48.

BEIRUT DAILY AL-MUSTAQBAL STATED THAT MOST ARAB STATES WILL REFUSE TO RECOGNIZE A NEW IRAQI GOVERNMENT IF IT IS ESTABLISHED UNDER AMERICAN AUSPICES AND ITS MEMBERSHIP IN THE ARAB LEAGUE MAY BE SUSPENDED. THIS IS BASED ON A RECOMMENDATION MADE BY A 'LEGAL AND POLITICAL COMMITTEE' SET UP BY ARAB LEAGUE SECRETARY-GENERAL AMR MOUSSA. THE PAPER ADDED THAT ARAB GOVERNMENTS HAVE AGREED 'NOT TO DISCUSS THIS POSSIBILITY OPENLY.'

KOREAN CENTRAL NEWS AGENCY (KCNA): THE SYRIAN FOREIGN MINISTRY AND ITS SPOKESMAN DISMISSED THE U.S. THREAT TO SYRIA AS A TRICK TO COVER UP ITS SETBACKS IN THE WAR IN IRAQ. 'THE U.S. MILITARY OPERATION AGAINST IRAQ IS SERIOUS STATE-SPONSORED TERRORISM AND AN INFRINGEMENT UPON ITS SOVEREIGNTY AND HUMAN RIGHTS... THE DPRK EXTENDS SOLIDARITY TO SYRIA, ESTIMATING ITS PRINCIPLED STAND AND MEASURE AS POSITIVE ONES FOR JUSTICE AND PEACE.' (KCNA, 4/9/03)

EGYPTIAN DAILY: 'SADDAM DECEIVED THE IRAQIS AND THE ARABS TWICE IN 12 YEARS… AFTER CLAIMING FOR MONTHS HE WAS WAITING FOR THE COALITION FORCES, BAGHDAD FELL IN A BLINK OF AN EYE…' (AL-GUMHURIYA, EGYPT 4/10/03)

YVGENY PRIMAKOV, FORMER RUSSIAN PRIME MINISTER AND HEAD OF THE KGB (AND NOW HEAD OF THE RUSSIAN CHAMBER OF COMMERCE) SAID ON RUSSIAN TV THAT THE WAR MAY CONTINUE IN DIFFERENT WAYS. HE ALSO CLAIMED THAT HE HEARD FROM SADDAM HUSSEIN (BEFORE THE WAR) THAT HE WILL REMAIN IN BAGHDAD UNTIL THE END. (AL-QUDS, 4/10/03)

Oh no.. It won't be part of the Arab league?

Boooo Hooo..

That is about the best news I've heard all day.. The Arab League is a bad idea who's time has come. It was created by the British a longass time ago if I recall correctly and there's no love lost now.

Expect this kind of nonsense from many different quarters. Especially if the UN gets the kind of role in Iraq that I think it deserves - NONE! OK, GW will give them something to do - relief or some such. The real issues come down to the Russian, French and German contracts and how much of them will be repaid.

From the MEMRI page summarising Arab press responses to the fall of Baghdad (linked in an earlier story):

"VII. The Syrian Press

None of Syria's official newspapers referred to the fall of Baghdad yesterday, and no editorial discussed the American takeover of the city. Also, no pictures of the toppling of the statue of Saddam were printed."

No membership to the Arab League? Well, that gives Iraq a better-than-even chance of success right off!

Occupation?

The worries about American occupation in Iraq is meaningless and childish.

When America liberated South Korea did they impose their occupation there?
When America liberated France did they impose their occupation there?
When America defeated Germany did they impose their occupation there?
When America defeated Japan did they impose their occupation there?
When America liberated Kuwait did they impose their occupation there?
When America liberated Kosovo did they impose their occupation there?

Did America impose occupation in all these places or did they sacrifice lives of their people for all these places?

In fact the opposite is true. If those countries would like to express their gratitude and invite America to help them in the rebuilding of their countries, chances are they will have a better country than before. More prosperous, more free and more efficient!

I believe America's success cannot be achieved through America's superiority in technology alone but through their attitude of concern for human values! This attitude have invited the power of God to help them!

Sorry! I am a Malaysian not American but I cannot help hoping that the Arabs can get their hatred for American out of their system. It is causing them to have a serious blind spot.
