Syria: Saddam's not our responsibility
The United States, not Syria, is responsible for making sure Saddam Hussein and other top leaders of his regime don't escape Iraq by crossing the border into Syria, a top Syrian diplomat said Thursday.Posted By Michele Catalano at April 10, 2003 08:59 PM | TrackBack Heh, yeah, and we're also gonna be responsible for taking care of them if they DID cross the border. Posted by: DSmith at April 10, 2003 09:06 PMYou're gonna feel responsibility real quick if he turns up in Damascus, Dr. Assad. Posted by: Lou at April 10, 2003 09:16 PMInteresting perspective. I don't suppose you'd mind us coming in taking a look around in order to fulfill our responsibilities? Posted by: beachbum at April 10, 2003 09:17 PMyou know, it's not just a Saddam and a few top ministers that are missing. There are about 3 or 4 thousand Ba'th party and gov't people and their families that have vanished, almost into thin air. Certainly overnight. OK, Jr., we'll be right there. Step back and try not to get any on you... Posted by: aham at April 10, 2003 09:27 PMHey, get all the Ba'ath party officials in one place. Makes it easier to catch them all when we go after Syria. Posted by: ERDV at April 10, 2003 09:27 PMactually that Imad guy was spinning ..he avoided three times to answer the question whether his regime would grant asylum to Iraqi dignitaries; he said the border with Iraq is guarded by Americans and therefore it is not their responsibility to watch over their Ba'ath brothers who might move here and there from Iraq to Syria..ain't that spinning or what? Posted by: blaxee at April 10, 2003 09:46 PMI think he doth protest to much. Posted by: jamesbray at April 10, 2003 09:46 PMIt might also be the United States' responsibility to apprehend these very same people Syria almostmakes no secret of aiding and abetting. Hmmmm. I wonder if the US will seek UN approval for this simple mop-up operation it would take to put the Syrian regime out if *its* misery? If they take out Syria, then they get 2 Security Council votes... Now that's a little more fair... Posted by: Original Mark at April 10, 2003 10:30 PMI read that several Iraqi ministers have been seen in Jordan recently. Posted by: TangoEchoXray at April 10, 2003 10:33 PMWhat if the prophecy were true? What if the war could be ended overnight? Wouldn't that be worth fighting for? Wouldn't that be worth dieing for? Posted by: morpheus at April 10, 2003 10:36 PMSo the Syrians have relinquished the guarding of their border to the U.S. Very interesting. Posted by: Henry at April 10, 2003 10:40 PMI am so relieved. Just when I started getting teary-eyed at the thought of missing Baghdad Bob, a glimmer of hope comes from Damascus. Posted by: ABC at April 10, 2003 11:23 PMPost a comment
