Stranded without a boss, Iraqi diplomats hole up and some abandon ship
As Saddam Hussein's government collapsed, Iraqi diplomats were jumping ship, burning documents or at the very least left stranded in their embassies without orders and unsure of who their new boss will be. Across the world, Iraqi diplomats were in limbo Thursday, with the most abrupt about-face coming from the country's U.N. ambassador, who suddenly claimed ''no relationship'' with Saddam after weeks of swaggering rhetoric. ''The game is over,'' U.N. ambassador Mohammed Al-Douri told reporters outside his New York City residence before reportedly fleeing the country. Al-Douri, the man who recently mocked the coalition for expecting to be welcomed in Iraq with ''hugs'' and ''flowers,'' had a new mission. ''My work now is peace,'' Al-Douri said Wednesday. ''I hope the peace will prevail. I hope the Iraqi people will have a happy life.'' Posted by: Billy Pilgrim at April 10, 2003 10:49 AMNo he considers himself the elite of the Iraqi people. Remember guy's like him consider the average Iraqi as the retarded cousin. People to be guided and disaplined when they don't follow the orders of their betters. Any idea where he fled to? I'm thinking there are a lot of applicants for the Consultant on Iraq position over at TotalFinaElf. But he had such a cool hat. Posted by: Phil at April 10, 2003 11:00 AMThese guys are going to be begging for money in the streets pretty soon. Who's paying now for all their staff and luxurious apartments? Posted by: ElCapitanAmerica at April 10, 2003 11:05 AMCronies like this guy and the Intelligence Minister probably aren't a priority at this time. If the Iraqis want to track them down and deal with them, that's their business. The coalition has enough on our plate stamping out the rest of the resistance, stabilizing the country, and isolating Saddam's WMD. Posted by: tagryn at April 10, 2003 11:13 AMConfusion about Iraqi ambassador's plans AMSTERDAM - The Dutch government said Thursday it had no idea whether rumours that Iraq's UN ambassador was flying to the Netherlands were true. Responding to questions about the whereabouts of Ambassador Mohammed al-Douri, a spokesman for Dutch Foreign Minister Jaap De Hoop Scheffer replied: "We don't know anything. I have no idea what he plans to do". US and French media sources have reported that al-Douri — who represented Saddam Hussein's regime at the UN in New York until Wednesday — has flown to Paris on his way to the Netherlands. Air France denied that al-Douri had flown on one of its planes to Charles de Gaulle airport in Paris, but at the same time, the French police said he had arrived in Paris to connect with a flight to the Netherlands. I heard on Foxnews he was supposedly going to Paris. Makes sense. Posted by: ERDV at April 10, 2003 09:36 PMPost a comment
