They brought up a tank an M88 to the statue of Saddam in the center of Baghdad, to help bring it down (Fox TV)

Nit-picking: I think it's a Bradley.

Posted by: phred at April 9, 2003 10:12 AM

Dang! Alisa, you type too fast!

Posted by: Matt at April 9, 2003 10:12 AM

They need to make sure the only thing this tank does is provide power, and when it takes off with the rope tied to it, there needs to be an Iraqi civilian on the front directing it where to go.

Posted by: Phil Hornsey at April 9, 2003 10:13 AM

Sorry to nitpick, but that is not a tank-- it is an M88 recovery vehicle (driven and used by mechanics to recover broken / stuck vehicles-- also used to pull out engines and carries the appropriate tools, etc., for repairs)

Posted by: U.S. Cavalry at April 9, 2003 10:13 AM

Oops. M-88 Tank Retriever. Lots of torque.

Posted by: phred at April 9, 2003 10:14 AM

pull, pull, pull, pull.....

Posted by: Knitting a Conundrum at April 9, 2003 10:18 AM

Phred

Talk us through it as it falls !!!

Posted by: JohninLondon at April 9, 2003 10:18 AM

Plenty of Iraqis sitting on the vehicle...

Posted by: Knitting a Conundrum at April 9, 2003 10:18 AM

cmon guys!! PULL PULL PULL

Posted by: ally at April 9, 2003 10:19 AM

Troops are handing out MREs (Meals Ready to Eat) to the Iraqis right now. Steel winch cable from the M88 around the statue.

Posted by: U.S. Cavalry at April 9, 2003 10:19 AM

must be 20 people sitting on it...I suspect that there are too many people around it to move very fast....hope they get out of the way before it falls....

Posted by: Knitting a Conundrum at April 9, 2003 10:19 AM

Had the cable attached to the rope-- the rope broke. The M88 now going back to the statue.

Posted by: U.S. Cavalry at April 9, 2003 10:21 AM

Looks like Mardi Gras morning in New Orleans

Posted by: Knitting a Conundrum at April 9, 2003 10:21 AM

check it out, they're giving them a lift to get up there and reapply the noose. Uho, trouble on the other side of the river. Building on fire. I hope we got the arab journalists out.

Posted by: cassun at April 9, 2003 10:22 AM

Rumour on Sky News, that Russia is helping Saddam get out of town...

Posted by: Knitting a Conundrum at April 9, 2003 10:23 AM

They better be careful. They can get in trouble for defacing public property.

Posted by: Bri at April 9, 2003 10:23 AM

Aaaah. Theyre redoing the cable to make it safer when it comes down.

Posted by: ConfigSys.boy! at April 9, 2003 10:24 AM

Sky is reporting that the Russians "neither confirm nor deny" that Saddam is at their embassy.

No way can he be allowed to escape. He needs to be handed over to the Iraqis. Otherwise they will storm the embassy ?

Posted by: JohninLondon at April 9, 2003 10:25 AM

They are using the mosque loudspeaker system to warn the people to back up so they don't get hurt.

Posted by: AvidWatcher at April 9, 2003 10:25 AM

How I wish you could have been there to see this Michael Kelly. The boot is being lifted!! RIP.

Is Al Jazeera showing this live scene?

Posted by: Lola at April 9, 2003 10:30 AM

Gunfire heard. Slight lull while checking it out. No major running for cover.

Posted by: AvidWatcher at April 9, 2003 10:30 AM

someone fired shots and people are moving back...

Posted by: Knitting a Conundrum at April 9, 2003 10:30 AM

It sounded like someone just fired a couple of shots nearby. Soldiers trying to locate shooter right now.

Posted by: Curt at April 9, 2003 10:30 AM

Did everyone see that sign that the Iraqis were holding that said "Go Home Human Shields. You U.S. Wankers"?. The only people not happy to see the Marines (well, aside from the Ba'athists) were the human shields who were yelling at them, calling them "murderers."

Posted by: U.S. Cavalry at April 9, 2003 10:31 AM

Were those gunshots in the square?

Posted by: Sicarius at April 9, 2003 10:31 AM

Posted by: Knitting a Conundrum at April 9, 2003 10:31 AM

ah, it came back...

Posted by: Knitting a Conundrum at April 9, 2003 10:32 AM

They are using the boom now (for those who can't see, imagine a large crane type thing that has a cable attached to it). They are usually used for pulling tank, Bradley, etc., engines out. Appear to be trying to hook the boom to the statue.

Posted by: U.S. Cavalry at April 9, 2003 10:33 AM

big boom....going to make a big boom...

Posted by: Knitting a Conundrum at April 9, 2003 10:33 AM

WAHAHAHA!!! He's draping Old Glory across Saddams face!

Posted by: ConfigSys.boy! at April 9, 2003 10:35 AM

Now holding Iraqi flag up.

Posted by: AvidWatcher at April 9, 2003 10:39 AM

What frabjous joy to be a decent Iraqi this blessed day !

Posted by: JohninLondon at April 9, 2003 10:39 AM

Nah. That was just so the crew could get a picture of it. Looks like they may be planning to have both a US and Iraqi flag involved when the thing comes down. Symbolic as it were.

Posted by: ConfigSys.boy! at April 9, 2003 10:39 AM

May be going to hoist an iraqi flag...

Posted by: Knitting a Conundrum at April 9, 2003 10:40 AM

I just heard (from my husband) that they are not supposed to put up British or US flags because it is a sign of occupation.

Posted by: Blogeline at April 9, 2003 10:40 AM

Shot of street leading to roundabout. Full of cars.

Posted by: AvidWatcher at April 9, 2003 10:40 AM

Posted by: bullseye at April 9, 2003 10:40 AM

Posted by: ally at April 9, 2003 10:53 AM

OK... its probably a good thing the marines helped. THat statue would have taken forever if we had just left it up to the iraqis

Posted by: Damon at April 9, 2003 10:53 AM

Is that the pre-Saddam Iraqi flag they're puttin gon the pedastal?

Posted by: Sicarius at April 9, 2003 10:54 AM

The trouble is, USMC would probably win !!!
