"Thank you, thank you, Mr. Bush!"

Fox News, CNN, Sky, BBC are showing the images that a lot of people have been waiting for, exuberant people cheering and celebrating on the streets, in Baghdad and in the North.

One group was chanting "Thank you, thank you Mr. Bush!"

Another chant on the BBC, "There is no god but Allah, Saddam is God's enemy."

All of the anchors are saying that it appears we are past the famous "Tipping Point."

Meanwhile, looting is ongoing -- furniture, ceiling fans, refrigerators, air conditioners are being taken from government buildings.

Quick, if Baghdad Bob is still alive, can't we hire him as our special Arab Propaganda Minister of Truth, and get this stuff on aljazerra an abudhabi?

The word must be out, that we got them in that building. Sorry, Brits, but I think the CIA got it right this time. Those reports I've been hearing on BBC, and posted below earlier, don't seem to be correct. Too much points in the direction that SH is gone for good!

YIPEEEE!

They keep on showing these images in BBC World here, also in the north! Kurds are looting and celebrating as well!

It's a shame that the UN is so useless - this is where it could have come in handy, various countries contributing military police to help keep order...

What does "Democracy, Whiskey, Sexy!!" mean?

Posted by: jerry at April 9, 2003 05:45 AM

Jerry, it was something an iraqisaid in Najaf when the troops entered

Notice the cheers of "Thank you, thank you Mr. Bush!"

No thanks to Mr. Annan or Mr. Chirac.

Posted by: mapchic at April 9, 2003 05:48 AM

I might note, by the way, that the Baghdadis seem to have some rather idiosyncratic ideas of what's considered worth liberating from the regime's facilities. :) I saw one gentleman on Fox News hastening away with what I would swear was a flowerpot full of flowers.

Posted by: Joe at April 9, 2003 05:49 AM

Ah, thanks. Well Let's hear it for Democracy, Whiskey, and Sexy!! then!

Posted by: jerry at April 9, 2003 05:50 AM

Yup... I saw the flowerpot guy and he looked so pleased with it! I think it's like Brits said (about Basra) they need to let their anger out... and rather them doing it by looting for flowers than by rioting I think!

Posted by: ally at April 9, 2003 05:51 AM

Yeah, we've really got to let them loot for a few days (and I doubt we can spare the manpower to stop it for awhile anyway). These people are filled with rage, and they need a period of celebratory theft and vandalism to get it out of their system before we start demanding orderly behavior and 40-hour workweeks of them. They've had Saddam's boot stomping on their face since at least 1979, and essentially since the late 1960's.

Iraq is going to be some country, now. It has one of the best-educated and most cosmopolitan populations in the Arab world, largely devoid of religious fanaticism. They work hard and have a great historical tradition. I expect big things from the Iraqis.

Democracy, whiskey, sexy!

Did anyone see the video of the Iraqi kid looting a window? It must have been double paine cause he had a smile on his face about a mile wide.

Posted by: SilkyLo at April 9, 2003 06:02 AM

by the way, heres a pic of the guy looting flowers.

hehehe Bless him.

Democracy, whiskey, sexy & fake flowers!!!

Posted by: ally at April 9, 2003 06:04 AM

Ok, let them loot government offices and palaces. Schools is not nice, but can be refurnished. But not hospitals. They are needed so much now.

Posted by: murple at April 9, 2003 06:05 AM

I can't believe how *good* it feels to watch the Iraqis gathering and cheering in the streets. Even the looting they've been showing has more of an aire of jubilee than maliciousness.

We're doing the right thing.

Posted by: Mason at April 9, 2003 06:09 AM

Another observation from the video I've seen - I don't know if it's "normal" that people fight over stuff when looting happens, but I'm not seeing any of it going on.

Posted by: Mason at April 9, 2003 06:13 AM

What about the intelligence service archive? Hope US has plans for securing the archives, if these hasn't been carted away by retreating Iraqi forces.

Posted by: Lola at April 9, 2003 06:21 AM

That's the strangest thing about this "looting;" it looks more like one, exceptionally large "moving day."

Other odd raw footage that was being displayed on NTV in addition to this scene was a group of what looked like Bradleys traversing a field across the street from civilians. People were walking about, some were watching. Kids were hamming it up for the camera and laughing. It had that wierd "parallel universes" feel to it.

Democracy, Whiskey, Sexy!!!!

I think we have a national anthem, eh?

Posted by: name at April 9, 2003 06:27 AM

vic, i saw that wideo too from NTV. It was very cool. Did you see the UN vehicles that had obviously been stolen? Good for the looters. Have fun, show those who still are in doubt (Hollywood Liberals), that you are happy we came to set you free!!

p.s. Let Peter Arnett know he's wrong. Check out today's finest:

BOMBS BLAST HOMES INSTEAD OF SADDAM

WHEN I heard the story Saddam may have been bombed I knew it had to be wrong intelligence. It had to be rubbish.

I liked the guy stealing a single big-ass tire. Not a very attractive tire at that.

Keep reminding yourself that these are the very people the anti-war crowd didn't want to help.

Posted by: Der Blaue Engel at April 9, 2003 07:26 AM

Lord, the UN vehicle driving down the freeway was priceless to see :) I suppose the UN has made at least one Iraqi happy :)

Poor guy who made away with a tire probably showed up just a little too late :)

The Iraqi shopkeeper who runs the store across from my home was a very happy man last night with progress 'til then. I'm looking forward to talking to him this evening.

Why do you enjoy so mouch the looting of the UN compound? I can't get it?
The problem with you guys from the US, that normally you win the wars, and lose the peace. Vietnam was an exeption if I am right? There you lost the war too. Are you going to stand up for the disamrmament of the "christian fanatics" too, or it is OK that they have weapons of mass destruction in their hands?

Posted by: G. k at April 9, 2003 08:58 AM

G.K.
What the hell are you talking about? Germany, Japan, and Italy did pretty well, doncha think? And by the way, the reason it's so funny that the UN is getting looted is because they are a bunch of useless gits. If if were up to the UN, the F***ing UN and the French would still be cozying up to SH and allowing him to imprison 5-10 year old children. Yeah. My heart f***ing bleeds for the UN.

Posted by: johnnymozart at April 9, 2003 09:15 AM

Is "Thank you Bush" Iraqi for "thanks France for all your help" Quickly followed by "Amerika" which I believes translates into "Let us cut you (France) a good deal on oil", then of course the "No Saddam" which apparently means "We want to be governed by the UN"

Posted by: Genghis at April 9, 2003 09:24 AM

G. k , the reason we are enjoying watching the UN compound being looted is that we are seeing what the IRAQIS think of the UN. Please note: Government buildings are being looted, the UN compound is being looted, and private shops are being left alone.

Doesn't this tell you something about what the UN has been doing in Iraq? And what the Iraqis think about it?

Posted by: Jrm at April 9, 2003 09:48 AM

After all, 12 years of UN sanctions have left quite an impression on the citizens. The US didn't have anything to do with those...
