The Arab Street speaks...
From the Sydney Morning Herald In Muscat, Oman, scores of men watched the news from Baghdad with angry and resentful faces. One shouted, "Where is your army Saddam?" Another, not believing the television pictures, grumbled: "These Americans are relying on false propaganda!" There are none so blind etc etc Posted By Alan E Brain at April 8, 2003 11:24 PM | TrackBack Comments
These people will never be able to manufacture a decent toaster until they can get around this kind of ignorance. Democracy. Whiskey. Sexy. Ha Ha, he doesnt even have the kind of forks with only 3 tongs, he only has the 4 tong type of fork......And they believe him..... Posted by: Frockensthien at April 8, 2003 11:28 PMI am always amazed at people's ability to choose to believe, even when the facts are not backed up by their beliefs. Posted by: Knitting a Conundrum at April 8, 2003 11:30 PMDoes telemarketing work well in Arab countries... Invest now in this revolutionary "Jew Away" spray... Spray it into the air and all the jewery will disappear, replaced with the exotic and erotic smell of camel ass, bring back those happy memories of your first time... Posted by: Original Mark at April 8, 2003 11:35 PMSigh. I remember a retired special forces colonel that the Lehrer News Hour uses for commentary saying that the Arab has a particular cultural mental defense mechanism, to retreat into a world of fantasy, of ideals detailing he way the world should be, when they feel pressured. It's pretty obvious we're seeing that all over now. He also said it's typically none too easy a easy task to shock them out of it. Phil - nice spot - I hadn't equated the two Posted by: Frank G at April 8, 2003 11:53 PMAhhh.... The useful idiots of the middle east. It's almost a breathtaking spectacle to observe the utter lack of intellect over there. The dumb monkeys from Al Jazeera wants everyone to believe that the US drove a tank onto an open bridge in broad daylight, in full view of hundreds of journalists, and took a pot-shot at them to shut them up! What possible purpose would that serve? If the US did in fact want to shut them up, why do it towards the end of the war? Why didn't they just drop a JDAM on the Palestine Hotel and claim it was an error? Better yet, why didn't a US soldier hide in a bush with an RPG and fire a few shots at the hotel ro make it look like the Iraqi's did it? But do Al Jazeera ask themselves those type of questions? No, they would rather live in a dream world of US conspiracy theories than do some decent reporting. Posted by: Poep at April 8, 2003 11:54 PMThis nonsense always reminds me of the quote from one of the myriad Saudi Princes in an editorial in the Al Riyadh decrying US media as unfairly depicting: "Arabs as barbarians...and [by showing Arab] traditions and beliefs as the height of backwardness." Right. Well, they might just stop passing us dumptrucks full of evidence. Seriously, there are plenty of decent Arab out there. I know several (and interestingly they all immigrated to the US), but the even the most serious and reasonable of them seem to be afflicted with this opinion that, in the face of all evidence, they are the vanguard of some kind of super culture. This is supposedly because they built the telescope a couple hundred years early, and discovered the proper use of zero. Very good, but all the people who did that are dead, what have contemporary Arab nations done? They seem to be experts at oppression and anti-Semitism, but it ain't much to build an ascendant civilization on. If I ever discover a time machine and get stuck in 1275, I'll convert to Islam and move to Baghdad, otherwise I think I'll stick with the culture that quit giving royalty power 230 years ago, and doesn't settle religious arguments by stoning. On the other, other hand, I suppose a lot of the mess in the middle east actually is the fault of the colonial powers. They drew up absurd borders and recruited the whole army out of minority tribes who had no connection to the rest of society. Then when they left and oil was discovered, the army ended up superior to and independent of the civil power. Lebanon was a nice exception, then the Syrians killed it. God I hope this Iraq thing works. Posted by: Phil Hornsey at April 9, 2003 12:29 AMI think we should seriously consider turning the middle east into a crater. These brain damaged goons are simply not worth all the trouble anymore. They stumble from one bloodbath to the next. This is not a civilised culture. They're one step away from swinging in the trees, flinging their crap at each other. Posted by: Poep at April 9, 2003 12:54 AMOur glorious egyptian armies have now shot down over 100 of the despised infidel Israeli aircraft and are on their way, soon to be telling us the glorious story of the capture of Jerusalem and the complete destruction of the Jews in palestine. Paraphrased from the average Arab news broadcast, 6 day war, June 5, 1967. by June 10th, the war was over, and the Arab proles had lost all respect for the Arab media. They have never recovered. I believe the effect after this war will be largely the same. When the war ends, later this week, with the fall of Mosul and Tikrit, the Arab world will come to a collective understanding (and semi-denial) that in fact, the greatest Arab army ever fielded was completely destroyed in 3 weeks, while managing a kill ratio of approximately 1:1000. This will add to their "humiliations" and strain even further the rotten political fabric that holds their worlds together. It may be the final straw to cause the Arab world to finally start pushing for real reform. But I doubt it. Those people love fantasy and brutal demogoguery, Nasser, Saddam, Khomeini, Arafat.. what can you do to help a people who have no moral character or inner strength? Not a whole lot. In a lot of ways it's like Africa, only with oil. Posted by: MITYDK at April 9, 2003 01:17 AMC'mon Poep, that's a little much. These people were running the greatest civilization in the world back when Europe was a pestilential backwater ruled by murderous yahoos. The Arab world is certainly a mess right now, but I live in the Middle East, and there are plenty of good and intelligent people here. They just need help in getting rid of these terrible authoritarian governments and reforming a few other things. It's not hopeless over here by any means.
