US Forces Explore Underground Bunker Near Baghdad Airport

The road led to what looked like a carport -a really long one, but a carport nonetheless. At the rear, though, was something far more interesting to U.S. forces.

A door. And behind it, lined with moss, a cave entrance - another mysterious, potentially dangerous gateway into the murky world of Baghdad Underground.

Was this a path to one of Iraqi President Saddam Hussein's notorious hideouts? Were booby traps - or, worse, Iraqi soldiers lurking inside?

"We wanted to know if there was enemy in there. We thought there was enemy in there," said Lt. Col. Lee Fetterman, commander of the 101st Airborne's 3rd Battalion, 3rd Brigade.

How the heck do you fight down there in concrete tunnels and rooms?

A burst of gunfire would buzz like bees around in there for a long time and you'd likely shoot yourself and buddies.

Anyone with experience know?

Rule 1: stay away from the walls - bullets will follow the walls (glancing ricochets).

Rule 2: stay out of the middle of the tunnel - people shoot down the middle of the tunnel.

Rule 3: profligate expenditure of munitions is usually recommended once you suspect the enemy to be near.

Rule 4: but be quiet about it.

Rule 5: you have to have a lot more guts than I do to do tunnel work.

They could use robots to scan these, didn't we use some bots in Afghanistan for the caves?
