The man who was Chemical Ali
Obituary of a madman from The Telegraph Within two years, and with the Iran-Iraq war under way, al-Majid had become one of Saddam's closest military advisers and head of the Mukhabarat, the state security service. In 1983 he directed operations in the "collective punishment" of inhabitants of the town of Dujail, in the Balad district of Iraq, after an assassination attempt on Saddam. The whole town was razed to the ground.Posted By Michele Catalano at April 8, 2003 11:01 AM | TrackBack Comments
MKT TICKING UP-RUMORS THAT AL-JAZEERA REPORTING SADDAM DEAD got this from one of my brokers, can anyone confirm? Weird how every story has 'Chemical Ali's age slightly differently. It's 65,it's 64,now 62. Posted by: JH at April 8, 2003 11:20 AMHis precise age now: DEAD. Posted by: af at April 8, 2003 11:25 AMAt least we stopped his back-ache for him! Posted by: Cockney Rebel at April 8, 2003 11:35 AMMaybe we should call him "Pesticide Ali" instead, given the way some folks seem determined to believe there are _no_ chemical weapons in Iraq, no matter how many suspicious barrels, boxes, crates, and shells are found. Just a thought... ;-) Posted by: donna at April 8, 2003 12:36 PMI heard last night that the Brits in Basrah are now casting doubt that the person they identified as Ali is really he. Has that been cleared up? The report was attributed to WaPo, but I haven't followed up. I don't think that we will find the stocks of WMD until we get the location from Saddam's scientists, assuming they're still alive, or from captive high level Ba'ath officials, assuming any are still alive. Posted by: AST at April 8, 2003 01:13 PMI wonder what it's like to sleep in a rockpile. Posted by: MoronWatch at April 8, 2003 01:50 PMIt may be too early to refer to Chemical Ali in the past tense.
