NYTimes: Iraqi Officials Used Hotel for Protection

Palestine Hotel update

Some senior Iraqi officials appeared to have abandoned the hotel where they took up residence during the first 20 days of the war in an apparent attempt to find safety for themselves in a building they assumed would be immune from bombing and ground fire. Journalists tempted to leave the immediate area were ordered to remain.

"Inconceivable"?
I don't think that word means what you think it means.

NO FRICKIN' WAY, MANDINGO!

Posted by: apotheosis at April 8, 2003 10:14 AM

Lies, all lies!!! This criminal website is obviously the stupid tool of the cowardly mercenary invaders who have yet to cross into Iraq!

There is no attack on Baghdad, we are merely conducting military exercises in anticipation of our final strike on London, Washington, Tel Aviv, and the Hale-Bopp comet!

ROTFL

Posted by: RockOn at April 8, 2003 10:16 AM

ROFLMAO Mohammed.

"senior Iraqi officials at the Palestine Hotel were seen clutching each other with tears rolling down their faces"

I can picture the cowards now....crying on eachothers military uniforms. Sure is a shame to hear of such misery (not). Soon their next of kin will be doing the crying. How many iraqi officials does it take to drain a 12 volt battery?

What amazes me most is the smooth and orderly flow of traffic around the traffic circle even when the shells are flying the gunfights flaring and the jets are screaming....as reporters are shelled and the senior officials weep, the traffic flows...and that one guy's car alarm sets off with great regularity....

Has anyone heard or does anyone know if any of the repoter/hostages were able to escape amid all the confusion after the hotel shelling?

I can't seem to find that info anyehere...

Posted by: babs at April 8, 2003 10:49 AM

At least some of them are still at the hotel...addicted as I am to the cbsbagcam, I keep seeing and hearing them prepare their reports...

Posted by: Knitting a Conundrum at April 8, 2003 11:02 AM

What *is* it with that particular cam? I'll go for the longest time just staring at those trees riffling in the breeze with nothing to hear but the occasional dog barking.

But do I turn it off?

No.

Posted by: jl at April 8, 2003 11:17 AM

I recognize the various dogs that bark in the middle of the night, I recognize the car alarm that goes off every time there's a nearby jarring. I can usually tell the difference between the sound of wind on the mike and fighting in the background or jets....I have found myself humming the chants that the mosque there broadcasts...it's truly a sickness....and if there's a flash in the sky, I will sit there and look and look and look...what am I waiting for? I couldn't tell you...maybe an Apache to land in the open space there? I couldn't say.

I think they were crying because they were informed that Saddam was dead from that strike aimed at him. They are probably related to him. The newspaper should have been smart enough to figure this out, but I guess the older more knowledgable people are logically in management.
