Basra exacts some justice...from the Times of London:

Some [Fedayin] tried in vain to flee as civilians from the nearby Shia Flats slum poured on to the streets in support of the British attack. Some shouted and cheered, greeting the British soldiers with waves, thumbs up and smiles.

Others wrought vengeance upon their oppressors, surrounding and attacking the fleeing Fedayin. A crowd descended upon one paramilitary, striking furiously at him and departed, leaving his lifeless body on the street.

Gee, so much for all the Iraqi people loving and venerating the regime that's been stomping on their nuts for the last twenty years...

isnt the "thumbs up" gesture in that region a lot different than what us Westerners think? something like stick up your arse?

In a lot of ME countries it means pretty much what the middle finger means in the West. However in my experience Middle Easterners understand and 'use' the Western meaning as well.

Wow. That was the most enjoyable mob-stomping-someone-to-death account I have ever read.

In Egypt, where I live, the thumbs-up is positive just like in the West. Don't know about Iraq, but people on other blogs (like the NRO Corner) have discussed this issue exhaustively, and it seems to be regarded now in most Arab countries as a positive gesture, especially among the young.

MMM, morning coffee and stomping a fedayin to death. Wholesome goodness. I'm smiling right now.

So when did we start calling them "fedayin" instead of "fedayeen"?

I think there's a rule somewhere that any Arabic name/term must have at least six alternate spellings. I think it's called the Qaddaffi Law.

How about Fedayawn?

So many jokes, so little time.

Is the thumb the same as our middle finger? Kind of makes you gals think of a Middle-eastern Pooh-bear, huh? (I am short, fat, and proud of that...)

Looks like the youth are learning Western culture already. But is it from watching the Marines, or are we pumping in Happy Days reruns?
